Can McCarthy Start For Minnesota at Quarterback?
NFL Season Props: Viking’s J.J McCarthy Odds

Former Michigan Wolverine quarterback J.J. McCarthy is taking his talents from two states and a lake over to Minnesota to compete for the starting job for the Vikings against the perceived starter Sam Darnold and Nick Mullens who started and failed to win three games for the Vikings last NFL season. As such, the 2024 JJ McCarthy season odds are worth noting.
We’re not aware how much playing time the 24th overall selection will get in 2024, but with a few before the start of the preseason, we can go deep with some of the listed prop bets to uncover our best NFL player props today.
McCarthy In Mix To Cash Offensive ROY Ticket
This is a difficult prop to handicap because we’re looking at 7-8 players who could make a case. The favorite is quarterback Caleb Williams with the Chicago Bears (+140) followed by quarterback Jayden Daniels (+600) who will play under first-year head coach Dan Quinn in Washington.
McCarthy is tied with four other players at +1400. If McCarthy is to cash a prop bet this season the offensive ROY is our best bet. Unless something unexpected happens in camp, Williams will be the starter for the Chicago Bears without legit competition for the position, which is why Williams is a massive favorite.
Daniels is listed as the starter on the Commanders’ depth chart but unlike in Chicago, there is plenty of veteran competition with Marcus Mariotta and Jeff Driskell. McCarthy is used to clashing with roster competition but it’s unlikely he’ll start, giving Williams and maybe Daniels a head start on this prop.
We are compelled to say that we don’t think either Williams or Daniels will meet early expectations. Thus, McCarthy has a chance to play his way into this award.
If That Cashes, This Must Too
We think that J.J. McCarthy has a chance to cash an offensive ROY prop then he must lead the rookie passing yards prop. McCarthy (+500) is tied with Bo Nix of the Denver Broncos as the third choice to cash this prop.
- Caleb Williams is the -125 favorite with Jayden McDaniels second at +250.
A peek at another prop gives us some insight as to how the oddsmakers feel about each of the rookie quarterbacks with Nix (+200) and Daniels (+250) the favorites to be the first rookies benched in 2024.
The Bears are expected to lean on Williams no matter what. This is why the former USC signal caller is +500 to be benched while McCarthy is the third choice at even money.
Better To Focus On Individual Props
With our NFL player prop story focused on 2024 J.J. McCarthy season odds, we found a bunch of opportunities that allowed us to focus solely on his performance. We think the top McCarthy prop is under 20.5 touchdown passes (-135).
First for McCarthy to cash this ticket he would have to have over a touchdown per game and we’re not sure if he’ll start behind center. With every minute not played, that equation becomes heavier.
Even if we’re generous and he becomes the starter in week three, he would have to average almost 1.5 touchdown passes a game. This is from an organization that has already admitted he would have to be sensational to win the QB battle.
It sounds like the young QB will see plenty of action but not enough to cash this ticket. This is why he’s also likely to go under the interception prop of 12.5 (-130). That does it for our 2024 JJ McCarthy season odds prop. It’s almost time to jump on those NFL spreads but until then there are plenty of the best NFL bets today.
