Learn From Last Year

Last season Saquon Barkley was the leading rusher for the New York Giants, and had mild success. Saquon Barkley shouldered a significant workload in 2023. He carried the ball on over half (54.4%) of the team’s rushing attempts (247 out of 454) and was responsible for 40% (10 out of 25) of their offensive touchdowns.

However, his efficiency wasn’t ideal. He averaged a modest 3.9 yards per carry, ranking 31st in the NFL, and his receiving yards per catch average (6.8) placed him at 126th. Despite a high volume of red zone carries (37, or 57.8% of the team’s total), his yards after contact remained low (453 yards, ranking 1595th in the NFL).

It’s worth noting that the Giants leaned heavily on the run game overall (46.7% run-pass ratio), which ranked 30th in the league in points scored. This likely impacted Barkley’s ability to put up explosive numbers.

Although Barkley had a somewhat disappointing season this year, he is now one season removed from his 1,312 yards on 295 carries rushing season in 2022. He also put in 10 touchdowns during that campaign.

New Team New Opportunities

Running back Saquon Barkley inked a three-year deal worth $37.75 million with the Philadelphia Eagles this offseason. The contract reportedly includes incentives that could push the total value to $46.75 million, with $26 million guaranteed. The Philadelphia Eagles standings from last season put them in second place in the NFC East, with a record of 11-6. Eagles fans are hoping with the addition of Barkley they can regain their spot as the number one team in the NFC East.

This move signifies a significant upgrade for both parties. Barkley, after six seasons with the New York Giants, lands in a potentially more favorable situation. The Eagles, meanwhile, solidify their backfield after D’Andre Swift’s departure.

While quarterback Jalen Hurts might take some short-yardage touchdowns, Barkley is likely to see a healthy number of carries and scoring opportunities. Although his rushing efficiency metrics weren’t ideal (ranking last in Rushing Net Expected Points per carry among backs with at least 200 carries), it’s important to consider the struggles of the Giants offensive line. A fresh start in Philadelphia could unlock Barkley’s full potential.

Heavy Workload Ahead

2024 Saquon Barkley season odds rushing props opened with an over/under of 1000.5 yards and a touchdown total of 6.5. The odds have now shifted to 1025.5 for the over(-112)/under(-112) and the 6.5 touchdown total has gone from -110 for the over and the under to -130 for the over and +102 for the under.

Eagle’s general manager Howie Roseman has mentioned that Barkley could see a heavy workload this season, and if his body holds up, that could mean big numbers for the veteran running back. The Eagles offense is surely going to put Barkley in the position to eclipse his rushing numbers from last season, and we like the over for his rushing touchdowns prop. Jalen Hurts will surely poach some of Barkley’s red zone opportunities, but we expect to see the Eagles pounding the ball in the run game and finding themselves in the red zone often next season.
