Current Damar Hamlin Status

Damar Hamlin has now made his official return to the regular NFL season in Week 4 2023 after a very challenging period. He suited up for his first regular-season game some nine months after his near-death experience on the field at Cincinnati: the Buffalo Bills safety took the field for the first time since he experienced a cardiac arrest in a game at the beginning of the year.

Hamlin collapsed on the field with a cardiac arrest after a blow to the chest caused his heart to stop on that Monday Night Football NFL matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals; medical staff at the Paycor Stadium resuscitated Hamlin’s heartbeat on the field and sent him off on an ambulance to local hospital University of Cincinnati Medical Center, for recovery. He made it out of a three-day, medically-induced coma.

Afterwards, he was sidelined as a healthy scratch for the first three weeks of the 2023 season, but he is now good for the regular season. He is now in it to win it.

In his comeback, Hamlin was given a crucial role on the Bills’ special teams unit for kick returns. Hamlin’s comeback from one of the most frightening moments of his life is now officially ON and kicking!

What Has Been Going Down in the Meantime

Hamlin Favored To Win Comeback Player of the Year

Damar Hamlin, who literally died on the field early this year, should return to play for the Buffalo Bills this 2023 NFL season. Per Damar Hamlin news, he stated his intention to play again as he was cleared to return in April. Already the recipient of the George Halas Award, given to players or staff who overcome adversity, Hamlin is most likely winning the CBPOY award as the -800 favorite.

The Runner-ups: Deserving Players That Will Lose to Hamlin

Had this been any other year, there is a slew of notables ready to bounce back to win the award. Next to Hamlin, a trio of quarterbacks are lined at long odds of 25-1: Trey Lance of the 49ers, Tua Tagovailoa of the Dolphins, and Russell Wilson of the Broncos.

Three Quarterbacks with Three Different Tribulations

While most injuries are ultimately overshadowed by Damar Hamlin news, overcoming them is still noteworthy.

For Lance and Tagovailoa, staying on the field has been difficult. Lance played in just two games last season before hurting his ankle. He needed two surgeries to repair this and is in a “make-it-or-break-it” year with the 49ers. However, he’s also got competition in the form of Brock Purdy. Lance should still start as he is the third overall pick. But it’s not a given.

Tagovailoa would arguably be the favorite to win the award had it been another season. The Dolphins have dealt with multiple concussions. At one point, he lay crumpled on the field in what was a grisly sight. Some even suggested he should retire for his own safety.

But with Tagovailoa, the Dolphins are an elite team. He will need to play and be in top form if the Dolphins are to contend in the NFL division standings in what is the toughest group in the NFL.

As for Wilson, he is also returning from an injury. But his “comeback” is more for his poor performance from 2022. As a Seahawk, Wilson led the team to be among the NFL leaders in offensive stats. But with Denver, the offense was abysmal. Wilson also posted his worst career stats and won just four of 15 starts.

With Sean Payton now coming over to the coach, expectations are renewed in Denver. The team is supposed to be much better and Wilson should have a resurgence.

A Hollywood Masterpiece and Other Feel-Good Stories

Damar Hamlin news will make for a feel-good story. In fact, there could be a series or movie in the works over in Hollywood. And speaking of, the Los Angeles Rams have a pair of stars ready to shake up the CBPOY odds: quarterback Matthew Stafford and Cooper Kupp both at 30-1 to win.

Stafford and Kupp Could Revive the Rams

The pair combined to lead the Rams to a Super Bowl victory just two years ago. But last season, they battled injuries as the team plummeted and missed the playoffs. On top of that, superstar defensive tackle Aaron Donald ruminated on retirement while top cornerback Jalen Ramsey got traded.

The Rams are now at long odds to win the Super Bowl (60-1). But if Stafford and Kupp return and are as prolific as they were in 2021, this team could make some noise. It will be the ultimate comeback story that writers will eat up, especially since a large contingency of them live on the West Coast.

In Geno Smith’s Footsteps

Geno Smith won last season’s CBPOY award by going from a journeyman to leading the league in passer rating. In the same mold, Sam Darnold (40-1) could be that guy this season. Like Smith, Darnold was drafted by the Jets. And like Smith, he didn’t live up to expectations and bounced around the league.

Darnold is now with the 49ers, his third team. He showed flashes with Carolina last season and is now playing for Kyle Shanahan, the “quarterback whisperer.” With Lance and Purdy’s injuries, Darnold may just start Week 1 and never look back. It’s another feel-good story worth writing about.
