USFL Championship Odds, Final Preview
Philadelphia Stars Deliver Upset
It’s been a wild ride for the Philadelphia Stars in the USFL’s debut season. They got off to a slow start but rolled down the stretch to advance into the playoffs.
The Stars capped the 10-week season with a modest 6-4 record to finish second in the North Division.
In the semifinals, the Stars faced division champions, the New Jersey Generals (9-1). Predictably, oddsmakers tipped the Stars as the underdogs to win. They were also the longshots in the wider USFL Championship odds market.
The Stars delivered the 19-14 upset in Canton Ohio, earning the victory in a nervy, back-and-forth contest that was swung their way in the final minutes.
Maurice Alexander Jr. swung it for the Stars as he returned an 87-yard punt in the fourth quarter to give his side the go-ahead touchdown. With the 19–14 lead, the Star’s defense then stepped up in a big way, forcing an interception in the final 30 seconds to seal the victory.
Birmingham Stallions Come Through as Favorites
The Birmingham stallions established themselves very quickly as the team to beat in the USFL after reeling off eight straight wins. A rare stumble in Week 8 against the Houston Gamblers marred their otherwise outstanding season.
Going into the postseason, the South Division champions were quite rightly tipped as the favorites on the overarching USFL Championship Odds board. They were also the considerable favorites against the New Orleans Breakers – a side they’d swept in the regular season.
The Breakers jumped out to a 7-0 lead, but the Stallions were dominant thereafter and romped to the 31-17 win, rubber stamping their ticket to the final with an exclamation point.
Quarterback J’Mar Smith is the catalyst for this team’s success according to coach Skip Holtz, who heaped praise on his signal-caller after the game. He told NBC “When J’Mar is focused and dialed in, he’s pretty good,” said Holtz. “I thought he was pretty good tonight.”
USFL Championship Final Prediction
The Philadelphia Stars deserve credit. Few would have predicted they’d be in the playoffs, never mind reaching the USFL Championship schedule.
Upsets can happen. The Stars’ win over the Generals is a timely reminder; however, the Stallions are the best team in the league and they really should come through on their favorable USFL Championship odds.
