The New York Jets ended their five-game losing streak in Week 14, upsetting the Houston Texans 30-6 at MetLife Stadium. The Jets, 3-point underdogs, turned back to Zach Wilson and received an unexpected signature performance from the much-maligned quarterback. Wilson completed 27 of 36 passes for a season-high 301 and two touchdowns, spurring New York to its biggest offensive output in over two months.

After throwing for only 92 yards in a scoreless first half, Wilson was 18 for 21 with 209 yards over the final two quarters. His 117.9 quarterback rating was a career high. Accordingly, Wilson was named AFC Offensive Player of the Week on Wednesday.

The last-place Jets moved to 5-8 and covered the spread for only the second time in eight games. They’re now 5-7-1 ATS on the season.

What made Wilson’s performance so unique? Let’s look closer as we break down Zach Wilson’s player stats.

Zach Wilson Player Stats

Wilson’s stats — 2,245 yards, eight touchdowns, seven interceptions — are underwhelming for a former No. 2 overall draft pick. But because he’s still just 24, the door may not be closed on him as a capable NFL starting quarterback.

As it is, the Jets haven’t exactly done Wilson any favors, throwing him being a leaky offensive line. Aside from running back Breece Hall and receiver Garrett Wilson, the lack of reliable playmakers has also hurt.

Wilson overcame those obstacles on Sunday, turning in his first 300-yard passing performance since Oct. 30, 2022, against New England (355 yards). Wilson’s 75% completion rate was a career high. He threw multiple touchdowns for the first time since a 23-20 loss to Kansas City on Oct. 1 and for only the second time this season.

As such, the Jets produced their most points since Oct. 8 when they beat Denver 31-21. They had scored 13 or fewer points in their previous four games, causing them to drop into the bottom five in the NFL in scoring.

Compared to other NFL QB stats, Wilson’s production is still below average. Wilson is 36th with a 78.2 passer rating, behind the likes of Taylor Heinicke, Joe Flacco, and Desmond Ridder. He’s also taken the third most sacks (42) in the league. But if last game is any indication, he’s due for some positive regression.

Odds Outlook

Despite Wilson’s stellar performance against Houston, bettors won’t find him in consideration for any major NFL awards. That ship has sailed. Wilson had thrown for just two touchdowns in his previous six starts, causing him to get benched in favor of Tim Boyle during a 32-6 loss to Buffalo on Nov. 19.

On top of that, the Jets still rank at or near the bottom of several offensive categories. They’re 29th in scoring (15 PPG) and 32nd in yards per game (266.8). Even if they improve upon those totals, the Jets still have a ways to go to earn more respect. At 5-8, their attention will soon turn toward the NFL Draft, if it hasn’t already.

Oddsmakers have reacted accordingly, tabbing the Jets a +50000 longshot to win the AFC East. Some sportsbooks no longer even have them on the board to make the NFL playoffs.

With only four NFL games remaining, the Jets don’t have much hope of improving those odds. A loss to Miami on Sunday would eliminate them from contention for the division. Even if they were to win, they’d have next to no shot of leapfrogging both the Dolphins and Bills over the next month.

And with Aaron Rodgers due to return next NFL season, albeit off a torn Achilles, Wilson is likely playing his final snaps as a Jet. There’s also a chance New York looks to take a quarterback early in next April’s draft. That could open the door for the Jets to trade Wilson, giving the former first-rounder a fresh start with a new franchise.

That’s important to keep in mind when making your NFL picks and parlays.
