NFC Week 17 Matchups: Huge AFC East Showdown Highlights Early CBS Games

Interim Denver Coach Rosburg Debuts Against AFC West Champion Kansas City

Can The Giants and Dolphins Clinch Playoff Spots?

With just two NFL games left in the regular season, the NFL games take on added significance.

When breaking down the NFL Week 17 matchups, five of the eight NFL teams playing in Sunday’s early afternoon games airing on CBS have either clinched playoff spots or are still in contention for a spot in the postseason.

That should make for some compelling games as the playoff picture in both the AFC and NFC should come into focus by the time these games are winding down.

Kansas City Chiefs (+450) is second only to Buffalo in the odds to win the Super Bowl while Miami comes in at +4000.

This had the makings of an intriguing quarterback matchup when the schedule came out with Tua Tagovailoa having Tyreek Hill to throw to along with second-year receiver Jaylen Waddle while Mac Jones was looking to build on a solid rookie season with the New England Patriots.

When taking a look at some key NFL injuries, Tagovailoa is back in concussion protocol and is unlikely to play in this game. Jones has drawn more attention for diving at the legs of Cincinnati defensive back Eli Apple on an interception return that he had no chance to make a tackle on than any of his recent throws.

Both the Miami Dolphins (8-7) and New England (7-8) are still alive in the playoff race. The Dolphins could punch their ticket to the postseason with a win.

When it comes to the 2022 NFL standings, this is the only one of the early afternoon games airing on CBS between teams still alive for the playoffs, but yet to clinch a postseason spot.

The total opened at 44 but has moved to 41.5.

Denver Broncos vs Kansas City Chiefs

Date & Time:
Location: Arrowhead Stadium, Kansas City
Moneyline: Broncos +550 Kansas City -800
Line: -14

The teams share a division, but little else. The thought was that Denver’s acquisition of former Super Bowl-winning quarterback Russell Wilson would help the Broncos take the next step as a franchise. Instead, Wilson has struggled and missed time due to injury and first-year head coach Nathaniel Hackett was fired. Still, this is a game worth watching among the NFL Week 17 matchups.

“Jerry Rosburg gets to meet up with the AFC West champion Kansas City Chiefs, the picture of stability thanks to head coach Andy Reid and star quarterback Patrick Mahomes.”

Kansas City (12-3) is fighting for home-field advantage in the AFC playoffs because the last thing the Chiefs want is to make a trip to Buffalo Bills in January with a spot in the Super Bowl on the line.

Indianapolis Colts vs New York Giants

Date & Time:
Location: Metlife, East Rutherford, New Jersey
Moneyline: Colts +200 Giants -240
Line: -6

One of the storylines when looking at the NFL Week 17 matchups has former Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Nick Foles returning to NFC East territory as the starting QB for the struggling Indianapolis Colts. He is coming off a three-interception game.

“The Colts (4-10-1) have already been eliminated from the playoffs. That is certainly not the case for the 8-6-1 Giants who could clinch a playoff berth with a win.”

The New York Giants are 4-0 against AFC teams and will look for another solid effort from quarterback Daniel Jones and running back Saquon Barkley.

The Giants rank in the top 10 in points per game in both the third and fourth quarters so that is something to keep in mind.

This is one of two Week 17 games with a total under 40 points.

The line opened with the Giants favored by three points and has moved to -6.

Jacksonville Jaguars vs Houston Texans

Date & Time:
Location: NRG Stadium, Houston
Moneyline: Jaguars -210 Texans +175
Line: -4.5

A year ago, this would be a game that impacted which team would pick first in the upcoming NFL draft. That is still in play for the 2-12-1 Houston Texans. However, the Jaguars are playing for something much more important – a division title.

Jacksonville Jaguars is tied with preseason AFC South favorite Tennessee for first place with a 7-8 record.

Jacksonville started the push to the top with a 36-22 win at Tennessee Titans and that is why the Jaguars are considered to be the division leaders.

Houston will be without leading rusher Dameon Pierce and receiver Nico Collins. For Jacksonville, quarterback Trevor Lawrence, linebacker Travon Walker and safety Andrew Wingard are all questionable.
