NFL – Commanders vs Bears Betting Odds
It’s Going to Get as Ugly as Soldier Field on ‘TNF’
Just when we thought things couldn’t get worse than the Colts-Broncos game, Amazon brings us the Washington Commanders against the Chicago Bears.
Welcome two of the worst NFL teams in what should be “downright ugly”. The Commanders vs Bears betting odds have it as a pick’em. It’s not because these teams are evenly matched. It’s because the public can’t decide which team has the edge. But at least the Commanders have something to play for…
Commanders vs Bears Game Info
Game: Washington Commanders (1-4) vs Chicago Bears (2-3)
Location: Soldier Field, Chicago, Illinois
Day/Time:
Rivera Must Take Command of His Future
Seeing Matt Rhule fired must make the Commanders’ coach, Ron Rivera, feel a certain type of way. Like Rhule, Rivera is into his third season with Washington. His team is also just 1-4 for the season after Carson Wentz threw the game away against Tennessee. Rivera’s job is likely on the line in this meeting with Chicago.
“Quarterback.”
That’s what Rivera said when asked why the other NFC East teams are more successful than Washington. Two of the Commanders’ four losses came against Philadelphia and Dallas. And to Rivera’s credit, Wentz was outplayed by Jalen Hurts and Cooper Rush. The latter is a backup who is 4-0 since taking over for the injured Dak Prescott.
Since beating Jacksonville in their opener, the Commanders have not won a game. Wentz has thrown six touchdowns to four interceptions for an 82.4 passer rating. Most notably, he threw just one touchdown against two picks as Washington got outscored 49-18 against Philadelphia and Dallas.
Of course, Rivera tried to walk back his comments. He said he meant that the other teams have had more time to build around their quarterbacks. Yeah, no one is buying it since Rush was never the intended starter and Daniel Jones, the Giants’ quarterback, is playing for an entirely new coaching staff.
Washington’s defense, which is supposedly Rivera’s forte, also stinks. This team is 26th in scoring defense (25.6) and has forced just one turnover, the fewest in the NFL. The unit is also allowing the fifth-highest passer rating against opposing quarterbacks (103.7).
With a porous defense and shoddy quarterbacking, it’s unsurprising that the Commanders vs Bears betting odds don’t favor Washington even against a team with worse quarterback play.
Bears Managing Despite Deprived Passing Game
“You can feel Justin comfortable where he is right now in the offense,” coach Matt Eberflus said of Fields’s progression. “He’s taking command. I can see him in practice, and I’ve seen in the last couple weeks, him taking control of route depths and talking to receivers.”
If Rivera is unimpressed by Wentz, we’re more intrigued by what he thinks of Justin Fields. The sophomore has the dubious distinction of having the fewest passing yards in the NFL and the second-worst passer rating. It’s not entirely Fields’s fault as the Bears did nothing in the offseason to help him.
Chicago’s offensive line has allowed Fields to get sacked 18 times, the fourth-most in the NFL. And his receivers are even less impressive.
However, there is more room for optimism with Fields and the Bears’ passing offense. Fields nearly led the Bears to a comeback over Minnesota. It’s not his fault that Ihmir Smith-Marsette fumbled the game away. Fields had his best game statistically: he completed 15-of-21 passes for 208 yards and one touchdown.
“You can feel Justin comfortable where he is right now in the offense,” coach Matt Eberflus said of Fields’s progression. “He’s taking command. I can see him in practice, and I’ve seen in the last couple weeks, him taking control of route depths and talking to receivers.”
If Fields can continue getting better, Chicago will be an interesting team on the NFL point spreads. Thus far, the Bears are 2-2-1 against the spread (ATS). The Commanders vs Bears betting odds don’t have Chicago as an underdog, which is only the second time this season.
The total is also worth eyeing. The 38 points the sportsbook has given this game is the lowest among the NFL matchups Week 6. But if Fields can look as good as he did against Minnesota, this game may not be as grotesque as it looks on paper.
