From Lookaheads to Week 10

Before the 2022 NFL season got underway, markets went to press with lookahead Seahawks vs Buccaneers Betting Odds. Then, not surprisingly, this game struck a completely different chord with bookmakers as the Buccaneers were projected as high as – 9½ in spread betting.

Fast forward through nine weeks and we’re faced with a line that is as tight as an accountant’s fist and sees the Buccaneers laying merely -2½ points.

Is it really the case that the difference between these two teams amounts to approximately a field goal?

Granted the Seahawks at 6-3-0 and in first place in the NFC West through nine weeks have the better record.,but they’re also a bit of a surprise package that has come out of nowhere. One wonders whether their run is sustainable in the long run.

On the other hand, the Buccaneers might have gotten off to an uncharacteristic 4-5-0 start, but they are proven champions and have the greatest quarterback in the game. A team of their ilk is one that can never be dismissed prematurely. Didn’t Tom Brady take 44 seconds to highlight that fact last Sunday, as he engineered a last gasp, game-winning drive to clinch the 16-13 win over the Los Angeles Rams?

Seahawks Punching Above their Weight Class

Few expected the Seahawks would even show up, never mind be competitive and challenge for a playoff spot in the NFC. This was largely down to Pete Carroll’s decision to start Geno Smith, a player that many had long written off as a has-been.

But to everyone’s surprise, Smith is proving to be more than capable. Even lethal as the Seahawks offense is firing at all cylinders.

Most recently, they’re riding a four-game winning streak, which includes a season sweep of the Arizona Cardinals. Smith and the offense have played well over this stretch, but it’s the defense that proved to be the difference maker.

In the last four games, the Seahawks defense has allowed merely 16.5 ppg when facing the Cardinals (twice), the Los Angeles Chargers and New York Giants.

Buccaneers Turning Point?

Flush off an inspired win over the Rams at Raymond James Stadium in Week 9, the Buccaneers snapped a three-game losing streak and jumped back into top spot in the AFC South behind a 4-5-0 record.

For almost one glorious minute, Brady was in his element and the Buccaneers looked like the team that won Super Bowl 55. In fact, Brady surpassed Peyton Manning to set a new record for game-winning drives at 55. He also became the first player in the NFL to pass for more than 100,000 yards!

Beating the Rams definitely salvaged Tampa Bay’s season, which has been marred by inconsistency, issues on and off the field and a weekly NFL injury report that was packed with big name players, including Mike Evans and Chris Goodwin, to name a few.

There is no doubting the quality of this team. But it remains to be seen whether those glorious 44 seconds represent the long awaited turning point of their season? Or was it just a one-off?

Seahawks vs Buccaneers Betting Verdict:

As mentioned above, the Seahawks vs Buccaneers betting odds market has experienced an eye-popping shift since the first NFL odds for the 2022 season were floated.

To move the line from 9½ to 2½ points isn’t chump change either, so clearly there’s an appetite for this Seahawks team. The markets and bettors alike are buying what they are selling right now.

But It could all be smoke and mirrors. The Seahawks haven’t really been tested by a good team yet. They’ve mainly faced teams with losing records and taken advantage.

Plus, Pete Carroll’s side is young, exuberant and wholly inexperienced. Especially when it comes to a high-profile and high-stakes game on the biggest of international stages with the world watching. Talk about pressure.

Thus, we’d argue that the value is now with the Buccaneers. Let’s face it, it’s not often you’ll get Brady and the Buccaneers at such a big discount against a team that may or may not be as good as its record suggests.
