From Lookaheads to Week 11

Last week, lookahead NFL betting lines had the Chiefs at – 5½. The markets opened this week with the Chiefs as high as -7½. This was likely down in part to the Chargers’ underwhelming offensive performance in Week 10, losing 22-16 to the San Francisco 49ers on the road. By contrast, the Chiefs defeated the Jacksonville Jaguars 27-17.

Since markets went to press, however, there has been a marked shift in the Week 11 NFL Odds against the Chiefs. Interestingly, the line has actually trimmed back down to where bookmakers had projected this NFL matchup with their lookaheads – at Chiefs – 5½.

Chiefs Rise

Although the Chiefs (-10) failed to cover against the Jacksonville Jaguars last Sunday, they won quite comfortably and pushed the spread with the 10-point margin of victory.

Patrick Mahomes had another stellar outing, passing for 331 yards and four touchdowns.

By the stats, the Chiefs are a solid 7-2-0 on the season and in sole possession of first place in the AFC West and wider AFC.

They boast an overall 4-5-0 ATS record with a 7.1 winning margin. Whereas on the road, the Chiefs are an impressive 3-1-0 ATS with a whopping 12.8 winning margin.

Things look different against divisional opponents though. The Chiefs are 0-2-0 ATS with a 2.0 winning margin against their AFC West neighbors. This includes a narrow 27-24 win over the Chargers at Arrowhead Stadium in Week 2.

Chargers Coast

Although the Chargers (+9) are coming off a disappointing 22-16 loss to the San Francisco 49ers at Levi’s Stadium, they did manage to pull off the cover as the hefty road underdogs.

That said, the Chargers went into halftime with the lead but were shutout in the second half by the stout Niners defense.

they are 1-3-0 ATS with a hefty 8.1 losing margin – a mark that is heavily skewed by lopsided defeats to the Jaguars (38-10) and the Seahawks (37-23).

Going into Week 11, the Chargers are a modest 5-4-0 on the season and in second place in the AFC West. They are 6-3-0 ATS through 10 weeks with a 3.1 losing margin on average. At home, they are 1-3-0 ATS with a hefty 8.1 losing margin – a mark that is heavily skewed by lopsided defeats to the Jaguars (38-10) and the Seahawks (37-23).

In divisional contests, the Chargers have played their best so far. They are 2-1-0 ATS with a 1.7 winning margin.

Chiefs vs Chargers Betting Prediction

It’s not surprising to see the Chiefs vs Chargers betting odds tipping towards the visitors. On balance, the Chiefs have had a much better football season so far.

The Chiefs are in the midst of a standout campaign, establishing themselves as a bona fide Super Bowl LVII contender. They’ve lost only twice and both losses came with the narrowest of margins. Most recently, they’re riding a three-game winning streak into Week 11.

Patrick Mahomes and Co. are firing at all cylinders. They’re the No.1 scoring offense in the league with an average of 30 points per game. In their last three outings, they’ve averaged 30.3 points per game while conceding just 19 points per game.

The Chargers are plodding along while wrestling with injury setbacks. The walking wounded include Keenan Allen, Mike Williams and Joey Bosa, among several others. As well, Justin Herbert is recovering from a spell with bruised ribs.

However, as is often the case with divisional rivalries, stats, figures numbers and all the analytics are rendered a moot point. This is especially true of this matchup.

Ever since Herbert arrived on the scene, he’s given the Chiefs a run for their money. Some of his best football has been played in this matchup. He pushed the Chiefs in a 23-20 overtime loss in his first meeting. Then, he beat the Chiefs 38-21 in their 2020 season rematch. In 2021, the Chargers split the series again, winning 30-24 at Arrowhead Stadium before losing 34-28 in overtime at SoFi Stadium.

If these two teams live up to their billing, this should be a fantastic contest, wholly worthy of its Sunday Night Football slot. By that same token, it’s a total toss up for NFL picks. There’s a case for both NFL teams to either win and/or cover here. For our money, we’re backing on the Chargers to do both and split this series.
