Overview of Houston Texans 2023 Season
The 2023 season marked the Houston Texans’ 22nd year in the NFL and the debut season for head coach DeMeco Ryans. Entering the season with low expectations due to their rebuilding phase, the Texans started with a 0-2 record.
However, they managed to surpass their previous 3-13-1 record with a pivotal Week 9 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Texans secured an NFL playoff spot for the first time since 2019 with a decisive Week 18 win against the Indianapolis Colts, finishing the season at 10-7.
Following a loss by the Jacksonville Jaguars to the Tennessee Titans, the Texans clinched the AFC South title, also for the first time since 2019.
Remarkably, they became just the fifth team in NFL history to make the playoffs with both a rookie quarterback and a rookie head coach, and the first to win a division under such circumstances.
In the Wild Card round, the Texans dominated the Cleveland Browns with a 45-14 victory. However, their journey ended in the Divisional round with a 34-10 loss to the top-seeded Baltimore Ravens, halting their bid for the franchise’s first AFC Championship appearance.
In the NFL Draft, the Texans made a significant splash by selecting Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud with the second overall pick. Stroud shattered multiple NFL and franchise rookie records, earning the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award, a first for the Texans.
Additionally, after a strategic trade with the Arizona Cardinals, the Texans picked Alabama defensive end Will Anderson Jr. as the third overall selection.
Anderson’s stellar performance earned him the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year title, making history as the fourth time teammates have won both the offensive and defensive rookie awards in the same NFL season.
