Super Bowl LVII Opening Line: Money Being Played on Both Sides
Betting Lines Gaining Action for Kansas City & Philadelphia

NFL Betting Line Updates on Super Bowl LVII Opening
After a thrilling victory on Sunday evening, the Kansas City Chiefs are back in the Super Bowl. They face the Philadelphia Eagles, their coach Andy Reid’s old team. Thus far, the sportsbooks have the Eagles as a two-point favorite (-130 on the moneyline) with a total of 49.5.
These lines have moved from Vegas’s Superbook Super Bowl LVII opening line at a pick’em and a total of 48.5.
The Pre-Super Bowl LVII Betting Line
Earlier last week, Vegas Superbooks already opened a speculative line on Kansas City versus Philadelphia – it was set at -2 with a total of 48.5, which is where it sits this Monday afternoon. Almost immediately, bettors placed money on the Chiefs and dropped the number to -1 for Philadelphia.
This all took place before Sunday
As the game ended last night – Cincinnati Bengals attempting its desperation laterals as the clock ticked to zero – the Superbook posted the Super Bowl LVII opening line at pick’em with a total of 48.5. This time, the public sided with the Eagles and bet them up to -2.5 in less than half an hour. The over also went from 48.5 to 49.5 to 49 in the same window.
As more hours go by this Monday, several other sportsbooks are floating a consensus spread of -2.5 or -2. Given how the public has bet, it is hard to see Philadelphia’s line going up to three points. If it does, expect folks to quickly bet on Kansas City within a span of minutes. Either way, these Super Bowl odds will remain tight.
Kansas City vs Philadelphia: The Actual Matchup
Judging by how the public is acting on the action, this is one of the more evenly matched Super Bowls in recent history. It is rare to see Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs as underdogs.
As an underdog, the quarterback is 6-3 and 7-1-1 against the spread (ATS). He’s faced Philadelphia once and led Kansas City to a 42-30 win in October 2021. Seven points favored them.
As for his coach, Reid is 3-0 in both the moneyline and spread against his former franchise. In fact, the only time Philadelphia defeated Kansas City without Reid was in 1972. Since then, the side with Reid has prevailed. The longtime NFL coach has 21 postseason wins and is in his fourth Super Bowl appearance.
Nick Sirianni is making his Super Bowl debut with the Eagles. The coach is in his second year with the team and he is one of the frontrunners to win ‘Coach of the Year’ for leading the team to its third 13-win NFL season. The Eagles have been dominant for as long as quarterback Jalen Hurts plays. The NFL team (the Eagles) ran through both the New York Giants and the San Francisco 49ers in their NFL playoff bracket.
As a result, they are the favorites in the sportsbooks.
Totals: Over or Under?
Most of the money bet on this Super Bowl’s total has been on the ‘over’. That’s not surprising as fans typically want to see a high-scoring game. The total at 49.5 is identical to the one last year between the Los Angeles Rams and Bengals. It went under. This 49.5 total is the second lowest since 2016.
Super Bowl totals have trended towards the under in recent history. The last four Super Bowls went under their respective totals. Coincidentally, the last time a Super Bowl went over the total was the last time Philadelphia played; a 41-33 total blew past the total of 49 points.
The Super Bowl LVII opening line of 48.5 (now at 49.5) was five points below the 53.5 average total between Kansas City and Philadelphia if we factor in their last three matchups. Individually, these staunch defensive teams have had their totals go under.
Four of Kansas City’s last five games went under while five of Philadelphia’s last six also did.
