Texans Start As Favorites To Win AFC South
2024 AFC South Preview, Odds, Projections And More
The odds have been released and we have your 2024 AFC South Preview. Last season the Texans surprised everyone by grabbing the divisional title.
They were +1100 long shots to win the division at the start of the 2023 season, but now they are the odds on favorites to repeat as division champs. The NFL Super Bowl Odds for the AFC South teams are, Texans +1500, Jaguars +4500, Colts +5500, and Titans +15000. The Texans currently have the sixth shortest odds to win it all.
The Jaguars and Colts will be in the mix for the division title, but after CJ Stroud’s impressive rookie season and a revamped roster, the Texans are poised to take another step forward. The Texans offense will be one of the best in the NFL and if their defense can follow suit, they will contend for the top of the AFC.
The Odds of winning the AFC South are as follows:
Team | Odds | Team | Odds |
Houston Texans | +105 | Jacksonville Jaguars | +270 |
Indianapolis Colts | +310 | Tennessee Titans | +950 |
Let’s dive more into these four teams and see who can win the division in our 2024 AFC South Preview.
The Texans Are the Favorites
The Houston Texans defied expectations last season, transforming from a rebuilding franchise into a division champion. After winning 10 games and exceeding their projected win total, the NFL has taken notice, placing the Texans among the favorites in the AFC South.
The Texans’ rapid ascent can be attributed to several factors. Quarterback C.J. Stroud’s rookie success, coupled with the additions of Stefon Diggs and Joe Mixon, has significantly bolstered the offense. Offensive line improvements and a formidable defensive front, anchored by Will Anderson and Danielle Hunter, have solidified both sides of the ball.
After what Stroud did last season with much less talent on his roster, people are optimistic that the second-year quarterback can make another leap. Pairing Stroud’s arm with potentially the best wide receiver in the league in Diggs can put the Texans’ offense in a new stratosphere. Stroud could even be in the mix for the NFL MVP race.
The Texans’ over/under win total is set at 9.5, indicating that oddsmakers expect another successful season. Given the team’s improvements and the challenging schedule, betting on the Texans to exceed this total could be a good move.
Additionally, the Texans’ playoff odds reflect their status as a contender. While the short odds may limit potential returns, securing a postseason berth remains a realistic goal.
Potential Division Contenders
The Jacksonville Jaguars are eager to put their late-season collapse behind them. After a promising start to the 2023 season, the team faltered, missing the playoffs entirely. Head coach Doug Pederson has made it clear that the disappointment will serve as motivation for the upcoming campaign.
Quarterback Trevor Lawrence’s development is key to the Jaguars’ resurgence. Despite flashes of brilliance, Lawrence struggled with turnovers and consistency down the stretch. Protecting him will be crucial, and the offensive line, featuring Cam Robinson, Brandon Scherff, and Anton Harrison, must improve in run blocking to support running back Travis Etienne Jr. The receiving corps, led by Christian Kirk and Evan Engram, will need to step up in the absence of Calvin Ridley.
Defensively, the Jaguars have undergone significant changes starting with the hiring of Ryan Nielsen as defensive coordinator. The unit, once a strength, struggled late in the season. Defensive ends Josh Allen and Travon Walker will be key to the team’s success, but improving against the run and generating pressure from interior linemen like DaVon Hamilton and rookie Maason Smith will be essential.
With quarterback Anthony Richardson at the helm of a promising offense and a defense that features young talent like JuJu Brents and Jaylon Jones, the Colts have the potential to exceed expectations.
However, consistency has been an issue for the Colts in recent seasons. Despite fielding competitive rosters and strong coaching, they’ve struggled to reach the pinnacle of the AFC. Rookie defensive end Laiatu Latu and wide receiver Adonai Mitchell add talent, but the team must capitalize on their potential to make a significant impact.
The health and development of Richardson will be crucial. If he can build on his promising rookie campaign, the Colts offense could become formidable. A successful season hinges on the team’s ability to overcome past challenges and unlock its full potential.
The Bottom Of The Division
Nobody’s NFL expert picks are taking the Titans to win the division and our 2024 AFC South preview has to agree. The Titans have embarked on a significant rebuild following a disappointing 6-11 season and the dismissal of head coach Mike Vrabel. The franchise has undergone a substantial overhaul, on the field and in the front office.
Key offseason moves included the acquisitions of quarterback Mason Rudolph, running back Tony Pollard, wide receiver Calvin Ridley, offensive lineman J.C. Latham, and cornerbacks L’Jarius Sneed and Chidobe Awuzie. These additions aim to address the team’s offensive and defensive deficiencies. However, the Titans face a challenging road ahead.
Will Levis’ development is crucial to the team’s success. Integrating new personnel will take time and adjustment. Expectations for the Titans’ season are tempered, with a potentially lengthy process back to contention.
