Tyrod Taylor Stats: Ready to Start a Quarterback Controversy
Taylor Could Shine if Given the Chance Under Brian Daboll

The New York Giants inked starting quarterback Daniel Jones to a lucrative four-year deal. But this doesn’t mean he’s bulletproof regarding remaining the starter. New York plays a tougher schedule, and the expectations are even higher. Thus, Jones could be superseded by his backup. Tyrod Taylor’s stats show he is more than a capable starter if he can stay healthy. As such, expect him to continue to push Jones for the starting spot.
Tyrod Taylor’s Career
From Backup To Starter to Backup
Taylor began his NFL career as a backup quarterback for the Baltimore Ravens in 2011. He was part of the team that won Super Bowl XLVII a season later, even if he never played a postseason snap. In 2015, he signed with Buffalo and won the starting position. He helped Buffalo snap an 18-year playoff drought in his third season as the starter.
Tyrod Taylor’s stats helped him set several Bills franchise records – some still stand in 2023. But with the Bills drafting Josh Allen, the team traded Taylor to Cleveland. While he started ahead of Baker Mayfield, the Browns’ first overall pick, he got hurt in Week 4 and never regained his spot.
It gets worse for Taylor as he signed with the Chargers. As he was named the starter for the 2020 season, he had his lung accidentally punctured by the team doctor. This all but ended his hopes of being a starter as Justin Herbert took over and never looked back.
While it seems like NFL teams looked past Taylor in favor of more promising young quarterbacks, his injuries ultimately did him in. He remains one of the better backup NFL players, and he has the stats to prove it.
Tyrod Taylor’s Player Profile & Stats
Tyrod Taylor’s stats are modest compared to the NFL’s elite quarterbacks. But as a sixth-round pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, Taylor has exceeded his expectations. His size limits the 33-year-old but he’s been praised for his work ethic and ability to minimize mistakes.
Career Stats
Trivia for the day: did you know that Tyrod Taylor’s career passer rating of 88.2 is ranked 16th among active quarterbacks this 2023 (minimum of 1,500 pass attempts)? He has a higher rating than Seahawks starter Geno Smith (84.8) and the man he’s backing up: Daniel Jones (86.5).

Will Taylor Get Another Chance To Start?
Taylor has consistently gotten a chance to start since becoming a backup in 2018. Since that year, he started at least once or entered in relief. Jones has gotten injured in almost every season hence why his NFL prop bets are adjusted to reflect it. The onus on Taylor is to stay healthy himself.
