NHL: Avalanche Stun Stars, Bettors With a 5-3 Win In Game Five

Stars Made Mistake Letting Av's off Mat, Series Heads to Colorado

You could feel a plus-money winner was coming with the Colorado Avalanche (2-3) after losing one of their big guns Valeri Nichushkin (28 goals, 25 assists. 53 points) for the rest of the postseason. We couldn’t pull the trigger because logic got in the way of what we know usually happens in these situations.

The Dallas Stars (3-2) have a massive depth advantage but couldn’t put Colorado away after old habits reared their head with Dallas unable to hold leads of 1-0 and 2-1. Game six of the Stanley Cups finals will emanate from Ball Arena in Denver with puck drop scheduled for 10:00 p.m. ET / 7:00 p.m.

Oddsmakers have opened Colorado as a -120 with a total of 6 (over -120) and can be seen on TNT, truTV, and MAX . Let’s get into our Stars vs Avalanche odds preview. At AACenter, at home, or wherever you may be catching tonight’s game on @ESPN at 7pm CT, we’re gonna need y’all to get loud and rowdy. 🔊

The Struggles At Home Continue For Stars

The Dallas Stars have become an unreliable wager at the American Airlines Center, falling to 3-4 (-1.93 units based on one-unit wagers). It’s the second year in a row where Dallas home cooking has been a problem for bettors.

Last year the Stars finished 6-4 at home but failed to produce a profit (-0.37 units). If we want to get crazy and go back over the club’s last five postseason runs dating back to 2016, we find that betting against Dallas at home has been the key to success (17-16, -3.09). We’ll keep that in mind if the series shifts back to the Lone Star State.

The good news is they’re heading back on the road where they’ve produced 2.78 units behind a 4-1 record. Since the 2016 postseason, the Stars are 17-14 away from home (+5.17 units). Only four other teams have been more productive in that span (St. Louis, Colorado, Florida, and Boston).

Uncover Exclusive Picks & Predictions From Our Experts.

The difference in the series has been Colorado’s ability to come back from single or multiple-goal deficits. Dallas couldn’t put the Avalanche in a two-goal hole even with a 10-minute difference between Joe Pavelski’s goal that gave the Stars an early 1-0 lead and Artturi Lehkonen’s late tally with one second left in the first.

Pete DeBoer’s team had another 5:45 with a 2-1 second-period lead to extend. Cal Makar scored on the man advantage to tie the game at two. Dallas had almost 16 minutes to extend the lead but Jared Bednar’s stuck to the Stars like honey on a bear until Cal Makar extended the Colorado lead to 4-2 early in the third period. If Dallas fails to steal the final breaths of hope in Denver, history tells us that the Stars season may fall from the sky.

Colorado’s Stars Need To Star

Our current NHL rankings still has the Avalanche (4th) one spot ahead of the Dallas Stars (5th) which means that this series is far from over.

Dallas had their chance to end the Avs season without Nichushkin but now Colorado has a sense that they can make a series comeback without their star. As we saw in game five Colorado still has plenty of firepower even if it’s not distributed as evenly throughout the line-up as the Stars.

While writing our Stars vs Avalanche NHL odds preview it became obvious that Bednar will lean on a top line that now features Lehkonen instead of Nichushkin, but the 28-year-old stepped up with his 6th goal of the postseason to tie the score 1-1. They will need more of this in game six.

This isn’t the time to worry about depth. According to the NHL player stats, this is the time for guys like Nathan MacKinnon (140 points in 23-24), Mikko Rantanen (104 points), and Cale Makar (90 points) to carry their team with multiple point efforts.

Will the Colorado Avalanche and Dallas Stars schedule require a seventh nhl game? Let’s end our Stars vs Avalanche NHL odds preview with our official selection.

Game Seven On the Horizon

Betting on game six has been a virtual dead heat, with 51% of the money coming in on Dallas. However, puckline betting tells a different story, with 83% of the dollars backing the Stars (+1.5, -250).

Although the Stars had their chance to take down an organization that boasts the most Stanley Cup Final experience with one team, they failed, and they’ll likely pay for that in game six. Furthermore, since 2019, the Avs boast a postseason record of 47-27 (.635).

That number improves to 41-17 (.707) as a favorite. Over the previous five postseasons, favorites between -120 and -129 are 36-26 (.581) We’re on Colorado in game six. That closes our Stars vs. Avalanche NHL odds preview, all the best with your hockey picks and parlays on Friday.
