Hot Times in Newark for the Devils

The New Jersey Devils continue to surge as one of, if not the best team right now in the National Hockey League. With victories in 18 of their first 22 games, their NHL Playoff Odds have rose towards the top of the charts and they are exceeding expectations from many in the hockey world and it’s largely in part to their young draft picks over the years finally developing into stars night after night. Forward Jack Hughes paces the club with 11 goals and 25 points.

He’s one of three players on this roster with 20 or more points, along with winger Jesper Bratt and centreman Nico Hischier and one of ten players in the lineup with double-digits in points on the season. In their last contest, a 5-1 win over the Washington Capitals on Saturday night, former Caps goalie Vitek Vanecek made 37 saves on 38 shots faced to beat his old club for the first time and pick up his tenth victory of the season.

The aforementioned Hughes has a big night with his first career Hat Trick, while centreman Dawson Mercer chipped in with a pair of assists.

Rangers Looking Raggedy?

The New York Rangers haven’t been as fortunate early in the season as their rivals from across the Hudson River. On Saturday afternoon, the Blueshirts blew a three-goal lead in the third period to lose by the NHL scores of 4-3 to the Edmonton Oilers for their third loss in the last five games and now New York has lost seven of their last eleven games at Madison Square Garden heading into tonight’s showdown.

Goaltender Igor Shesterkin has not looked like a defending Vezina Trophy winner, turning in some lackluster performances in net, while his veteran backup Jaroslav Halak has been dreadful in his handful of start’s thus far. While speedy forward Artemi Panarin does have 24 points, his goal production has dropped with only five tallies compared to his 19 assists.

Only forwards Mika Zibanejad and Chris Kreider have double-digit marks in goals so far. They will need to improve their consistency if they want to keep pace in this Metropolitan Division and Eastern Conference NHL playoff picture race
