Longest-Tenured Players on Edmonton Oilers, Nugent-Hopkins Eyeing a Stanley Cup
Playing on the same team as Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl can make it easy for a player, even one as productive as Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, to be overlooked. However, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins’ stats show that he has already established a career-high in playoff points with 16 points in 12 games.
After a somewhat quiet first round against the Los Angeles Kings, Hopkins had three goals and seven assists in the seven-game series against the Vancouver Canucks proving that he can be among the best NHL players.
Edmonton has +450 odds to win the series in six games, +550 odds to clinch the Western Conference title in seven games, and +700 odds to take the series in five games.
Edmonton is third at +275 in the odds of winning the Stanley Cup.
Dallas is favored at -115 to win the series with +115 odds for the Oilers to win the series.
The series with the Dallas Stars begins on Thursday. As was the case in the series with Vancouver, Edmonton will start the Western Conference Finals on the road.
Saving His Best For Last
Nugent-Hopkins was held without a point for just the third time in this year’s playoffs as Vancouver took a 3-2 series lead with a 3-2 win in Game 5.
Edmonton needed to win two games in a row to advance to the Western Conference Finals for just the second time in the last 18 seasons.
When looking at Ryan Nugent-Hopkins’ stats, only twice before had he had more than four points in back-to-back playoff games before the final two games against the Canucks.
Nugent-Hopkins had a hand in three of the five goals in Game 6 with a goal and two assists. In the winner-take-all Game 7, he assisted on Zach Hyman’s goal early in the first period and then scored his third goal of the series and fourth goal of the playoffs on the power play with 4:38 left in the first period.
That goal proved to be the game-winning score as Vancouver scored twice in the third period to make things interesting.
Hopkins is fourth in the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs with 16 points and the only players ahead of him are teammates McDavid, Draisaitl, and Evan Bouchard. With five points in the last two games of the series against the Canucks, Nugent-Hopkins earned NHL Player of the Week honors.
The NHL picks and parlays will have Nugent-Hopkins with some tempting odds in the series with the Dallas Stars.
Nugent-Hopkins Bouncing Back
Coming off his first career 100-point season, things were a little more challenging this season.
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins’ stats saw his points drop from 104 during the 2022-23 season to 67 in the 2023-24 campaign.
He had four straight games with no points in early March and he headed into the playoffs with six points in his final 11 games in the regular season. It has been a different story in the playoffs.
It took 24 games in the regular season for Nugent-Hopkins to record his fifth multi-point game. He has at least two points in five of the first 12 playoff games.
Ready to Join the Club
Nugent-Hopkins was the first player chosen in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. He is one of 16 players selected in that draft to have at least 400 points in the regular season. He has played more regular-season games (881) than any other player picked in that NHL draft.
Only Nikita Kucherov, Johnny Gaudreau, Jonathan Huberdeau, and Mark Scheifele have more points than the 699 for Nugent-Hopkins. Kucherov also has something that Nugent-Hopkins is searching for – a Stanley Cup ring.
Gabriel Landeskog, Ondrej Palat, and William Karlsson are among the other players from the 2011 NHL Draft class with their names on the Stanley Cup.
Last Team North of the Border Standing
Canadian hockey fans hope this is the year that the long title drought ends for Canadian-based teams.
The 1992-93 Montreal Canadiens were the last team from Canada to win the Stanley Cup. Five different Canadian franchises have reached the Stanley Cup Finals since then.
Vancouver lost to the New York Rangers in seven games in 1994, Calgary fell in seven games to Tampa Bay in 2004, Carolina edged Edmonton in seven games in 2006, Anaheim needed just five games to dispatch Ottawa the following season while Vancouver lost in seven games to Boston in 2011. Since then, only the 2020-21 Montreal Canadiens have reached the Stanley Cup Finals.
Edmonton joined the Winnipeg Jets, Vancouver Canucks, and Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Only the Oilers remain as Edmonton is eight wins away from the franchise’s first NHL title since 1990.
Next up is a series with the Central Division-winning Dallas Stars. Looking at the Edmonton Oilers standings, Edmonton is the only remaining team not to win a division title this season.
The NHL odds have Nugent-Hopkins with +1600 odds to have the most points in the series against the Dallas Stars.
