Vegas Two Wins Away from Jackpot
The Vegas Golden Knights head to sunny Florida with a commanding 2-0 series lead over the Panthers after the 7-2 beatdown they handed Paul Maurice’s club on Monday Night. Forward Jonathan Marchessault continues his scorching hot run, scoring two goals and an assist.
His eleven points over the last seven games and 12 goals over the last 12 games after being held off the scoresheet in the first seven contests of the postseason, has shown to the world that he is elevating his game at the absolute best time. Same could be said for young goaltender Adin Hill, who made 29 saves on 31 shots faced for his ninth win of the postseason.
There was lots of chippy play in Game Two, with star winger Jack Eichel getting hit hard by Florida agitator Matthew Tkachuk. Eichel left the ice for a bit but would return to the contest after that second period collision. Vegas has to continue to play with discipline and composure, something Florida hasn’t been able to do at all in the last 120 minutes of hockey played.
Florida Floundering at World’s Worst Time
The Florida Panthers are hearing that old grandfather clock starting to tick loudly towards midnight, as the club heads home in a 0-2 hole after a pair of disappointing, sloppy efforts of hockey, complete with penalty box parades and misconducts galore. Forward Matthew Tkachuk, who is the heart and soul of this club and has been one of their two Most Valuable Players during the postseason, has been playing with a frenzied frustration, taking three different 10-Minute Misconduct penalties in each of the first two games in this series.
His style is made to get under opponents’ skin, but you can’t continue to give this Vegas club power-play opportunities, especially when you have numerous guys in that Golden Knights lineup scoring early and often. Veteran netminder Sergei Bobrovsky got pulled early into the second period on Monday after allowing four goals on 13 shots. The 34-year old goalie has now allowed four goals in back-to-back games after completely immobilizing the Carolina Hurricanes’ offense, holding them to six goals over 174 shots faced in the four-game series sweep.
If “Goalie Bob”, as they call him in South Florida, can’t regain his rhythm between the pipes in Game Three, the fans wearing Gold and Black from across the country might break out the brooms by the weekend, and we could see this series and postseason come to a close.
Golden Knights at Panthers Betting Odds
Sportsbooks have the hosting Florida Panthers odds to win as short favorites against the visiting Vegas Golden Knights on Thursday night priced in the range around -115 to -120.
This is the first time in the 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs where Florida has been a true favorite. In 18 previous playoff games, the Panthers were underdogs in 15 of them with the other three contests lined in the pick’em range. For Vegas, this is just their third time in the last nine postseason contests where the Golden Knights are underdogs. They were lined as dogs for the entire Western Conference Semifinal series against the Edmonton Oilers.
The total for this contest is set at 6 goals shaded slightly to the Over around the pick’em range between -110 to -120. We saw the total move up from 5.5 in Game One to 6 in Game Two, and with both contests now going over the total, Vegas has gone Over the total in six of their last ten games this postseason. Florida had been trending Under the total in eight straight games before the Cup Final began.
