Storm Surging Back Home for Carolina
The Carolina Hurricanes return to Raleigh after a decent five game road trip out west, picking up three wins and seven points out of of a possible ten. Forward Andrei Svechnikov has been rolling hot, leading the club with seven goals and nine points on the short season, along with Marty Necas, who has three goals and five assists for a total of eight points thus far.
Last game, against the struggling Vancouver Canucks, it was evident that the Canes looked a bit fatigued, despite picking up the 3-2 win in regulation.
Both teams were quiet on the scoresheet in the second period and Carolina took a 3-1 lead with two goals in less than 90 seconds to open the third period.
Goalie Frederik Andersen picked up his third win of the season, making 14 saves on just 16 shots faced in the contest. It remains unknown as of press time if Anderson or backup Antti Raanta will get the start between the pipes for Friday’s showdown with the New York Islanders.
Rough Seas Hitting the Islanders Early?
Continuing Our Islanders vs Hurricanes Matchup Preview: The New York Islanders enter this contest on Friday night off of a 3-0 shutout win against their rivals, the New York Rangers on Wednesday night.
Forward Kyle Palmeri scored two goals while center Jean-Gabriel Pageau and defenseman Adam Pelech each chipped in two assists. In goal, Ilya Sorokin was masterful, stopping all 41 shots on goal en route to his third win of the season and 11th career shutout.
That win snapped a three-game losing streak for Coach Lane Lambert’s squad, who now will have to battle with two of the best teams in the National Hockey League coming up, starting with Friday’s contest against Carolina on the road before returning home the next night to battle the defending Stanley Cup champions, the Colorado Avalanche.
Lambert hasn’t decided which goaltender will get the start as of press time, but it’s hard to imagine Sorokin would not get a chance to immediately return between the pipes for this game, and possibly get both starts, while the club is still fresh this early into the season.
