NHL Odds Favor Leafs In Potential ‘Game of the Night’

The Rangers have won five of their last seven against Toronto. Their last three games at the MSG have been explosive affairs with at least eight goals scored in each game so keep an eye on the total, which is set at six goals.

Toronto Maple Leafs Continues to Torch the League
No team has been hotter than Toronto. The Maple Leafs are on a 15-game point streak (12-0-3) with road victories over Dallas, New Jersey, and Pittsburgh (twice). This NHL team has a +30 goal differential and is just shooting lights out with a 12.1 percent shooting percentage. Of course, Mitch Marner has been the catalyst.
The 25-year-old is on a 23-game point streak. He has 11 goals and 32 points in this span and is shooting 17.5 percent. In fact, Marner has failed to score in only two games this season. He’s a top candidate for the Hart Memorial Trophy as the Leafs continue to climb the 2022 NHL standings.
But it’s not just offense fueling Toronto. The Leafs have played solid two-way hockey, which has helped their netminders post the highest save percentage (94.1 percent) in the NHL in this 15-game span.
“Our top four hockey players drive us offensively,” Leafs coach Sheldon Keefe said following their 7-0 win over Anaheim. “But they also do a lot of solid things when they don’t have the puck and, for sure, you’re not the same team without that.”
Toronto is also making bank on the NHL betting lines, particularly on the puck line where it is 11-4 in this span. The team is also 6-0-1 in its last seven road games. That one loss came against Tampa Bay in overtime. But at this point, few can find fault in the Maple Leafs vs Rangers betting odds.
New York Rangers Picking Up Remarkable Victories
At their current record, the Rangers are performing below expectations. However, a four-game stretch that features wins over Vegas, New Jersey, and Colorado (albeit an undermanned version) have the Rangers trending. The win over the Devils carries some extra weight as it was the first time New Jersey lost consecutive games.
“It means a lot,” said Filip Chytil, the Rangers forward who netted the game-winner in overtime. “Great comeback from the team. We showed our character. Good two points.”
More notably, the Rangers scored six, five, and four goals in three of these wins. The team was scoring just 2.9 goals per game heading prior to this stretch. While that’s not much less than what they’ve averaged in 2021-22 (3.05), it means more as star goaltender Igor Shesterkin is not as dominant this season.
The Russian is still posting respectable numbers: 91.6 save percentage (SV%) and 7.4 goals saved above average (GSAA). But he is not “stealing” games as often as last season. Jaroslav Halak has also been subpar with a 1-8-1 record and an 88.8 SV%.
“He can’t do it every night, obviously. But the last two games, he’s been outstanding, and you know, you need great goaltending to win in this league, and that’s what he’s done for us,” Rangers coach Gerard Gallant said of his goaltender prior to their game against New Jersey on Monday. “He’s had the odd bad game here and there — very, very odd — but he’s our top player.’’
Indeed, the Rangers may need to rely more on their offense as their goaltenders cannot dominate the opposition. New York has won its last two games as an underdog, however. A combination of their efficient scoring and a solid outing from Shesterkin may just beat the Maple Leafs vs Rangers betting odds.
