New York Dropped Pair of One-Goal Losses, While Hurricanes Get Stronger
The New York Islanders (8-7-6, 22 points) are headed down south to take on the Carolina Hurricanes (13-8-0, 26 points) who are right on the heels of the New York Rangers for the top spot in the Metropolitan Division.
The Islanders are nine points behind their city mates but just four in back of the ‘Canes, making this a big match-up for the Isles. Current NHL odds show Carolina as a -190 favorite with a total of six. Puck-drop is scheduled for 7:37 p.m. ET / 4:37 p.m. PT and can be seen on ESPN+ and HULU. We start our Islanders vs Hurricanes NHL odds preview starting with New York.

Islanders Lack Scoring From Star
Heading into the third period, the New York Islanders led the New Jersey Devils 4-2, but instead of adding one more to put the game away, they allowed three third-period goals, including Curtis Lazar’s goal with 23 seconds left to hand the Devils a regulation win. The four goals were good overall, but it’s clear that Lou Lamoriello’s team lacks scoring and a killer instinct that would have suffocated New Jersey in the final 20.
The Islanders are 29th in scoring and are trying to overcome a slow start by some of their stars, starting with former Notre Dame star Anders Lee. Their effort in their own end is an issue too but we’ve seen in the past where this is exactly the spot they’ve flourished in.
It’s a short sample size, but New York has some history of coming back strong after a poor defensive performance, with three unders after allowing five goals or more. This is an important stretch of games on the New York Islanders’ schedule, with four division opponents in their next five games. We continue our Islanders vs Hurricanes NHL odds preview by turning our attention to Carolina.
Hurricanes Starting To Find Their Way
We know the Carolina Hurricanes are at their best when there is very little room on the ice. That’s what we’re starting to see now as five of the ‘Canes last seven games have cashed under tickets after starting the season 8-6 to the over.
In that span Carolina is 5-2 straight up, allowing just eight goals in their wins. It’s funny how the Islanders are the team that has given the Hurricanes as much trouble as any other team in the East, even though they own a 4-2 record against New York over their last six.
The last two meetings found their way into overtime, including a 4-3 Carolina win in the first meeting in 2023. Four of the last five decisions have gone over the total. An interesting trend that plays right into where the Islanders are is that Carolina is 4-1 to the under when their opponent comes in allowing five goals or more in their previous game. We conclude our New York vs Carolina NHL odds preview with our official selection.
Follow Eye Of The Storm
Carolina is at their best when they play under hockey and with their recent trend of collecting wins, we think they’ll start getting back to that brand of hockey, especially at home where they’ve always played their best. There are some questions that will aid our wager, like the potential absence of Andrei Svechnikov who is listed as questionable as he suffers through an illness.
The word is he has a bug that has been league-wide. His offensive numbers have not been impressive but he is a valuable member of the ‘canes second line and is an integral part of their power play. We think the final NHL result of this match-up will be a low-scoring game compelling us to ‘under’ the total as our official selection.
