NHL Over/Under: 7 Under -125, FLA -175/MTL +155

Forward Matthew Tkachuk scored his fifth career Hat Trick as the Florida Panthers beat the Montreal Canadiens 5-2 as moderate road favorites on Thursday night.

The Panthers, who now have 83 points on the season, sit just three points behind the Pittsburgh Penguins for the second and final Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference with six games remaining. Tkachuk also chipped in an assist, giving him over 100 points for the second year in a row.

Centerman Anton Lundell scored a pair of goals, bringing his season total to ten while goaltender Alex Lyon made 18 saves on 20 shots faced for his second win in the last two games.

Results: NJ wins 2-1
NHL Over/Under: 6 Under +105, NYR +115/NJ -135

The New Jersey Devils picked up an important pair of points on Thursday, beating their hated rivals across the Hudson River, the New York Rangers 2-1, and now closing in on the Carolina Hurricanes’ lead in the Metropolitan Division now down to one single point.

Goaltender Vitek Vanecek became just the second-ever Devils netminder to win 30 games in a season, along with Hall-of-Famer Martin Brodeur, who accomplished the feat 14 times. He stopped 22 of 24 Ranger shots while goals scored by forward Erik Haula and Timo Meier in the first period carried the way offensively.

The Rangers lost all four meetings against New Jersey this season and now sit four points behind the Devils, and with the win in regulation, New York would have to open their first round series in Newark with how things currently stand in the division. Forward Chris Kreider scored his 33rd goal of the season on the power-play in the second period, the lone tally in the contest for New York.

Results: TB wins 5-1
NHL Over/Under: 6 Under +100, WAS +175/TB -210

The Tampa Bay Lightning delivered a thunderous blow to the Washington Capitals’ playoff hopes in a 5-1 loss on Thursday night as large home favorites. Forward Patrick Maroon scored a pair of goals along with a goal and assist each from Alex Killorn and Steven Stamkos. Goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy made 30 saves on 31 shots faced for his 33rd victory of the season.

Washington has now lost six of their last seven games and with 77 points, the Capitals sit seven points out of the final Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference with six games remaining. Should the Caps miss the playoffs, it would be the first time since the 2013-14 season.

Results: DET wins 3-2
NHL Over/Under: 5.5 Under +105, CAR -215/DET +190

Jake Walman scored from the blue-line with 3.8 seconds left in regulation to give Carolina their third consecutive loss. Backup goalie Alex Nedjelkovic made 31 saves on 33 shots faced to earn the victory over his former club that traded him away two seasons ago.

Forward David Perron notched two assists while Dylan Larkin scored on the power-play along with a first period tally from Dominik Kubalik. The Hurricanes now hold the Metropolitan Division by one point over the New Jersey Devils, who picked up a regulation win. Carolina has eight games left to play, with six of their opponents sitting outside of the playoff picture.

Results: EDM wins 2-0
NHL Over/Under: 6.5 Over -130, LA +140/EDM -165

Superstar Connor McDavid scored his 61st goal of the season and 300th of his career as the Edmonton Oilers beat the Los Angeles Kings 2-0, leaping over the Kings into second place into the Pacific Division with 97 points with six games remaining and one in hand over Los Angeles.

Goaltender Stuart Skinner was sensational, stopping all 42 shots faced for his first shutout of the season and second in his career. Forward Evander Kane also scored for the Oilers, who are on a nine-game point streak, winning eight of those contests. These two clubs face-off again on Tuesday night in Edmonton.

Other News & Notes Around The League

  • Goaltender Tristan Jarry stopped all 28 shots faced for his 13th career shutout, helping the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Nashville Predators 2-0 on Thursday night. With the victory, the Pens now hold onto a one-point lead over the Florida Panthers for the second and final Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference. Nashville, who has now lost three of their last four games, missed an opportunity to jump over the idle Calgary Flames in their chase for a Wild Card berth in the West. The Predators, with 82 points, remain three points behind the Winnipeg Jets for that last playoff spot.
  • Forward Alex DeBrincat scored just over 90 seconds into overtime as the Ottawa Senators pick up a 5-4 win over the Philadelphia Flyers. Former long-time Flyers captain Claude Giroux scored his 29th goal of the season for Ottawa, who now has 79 points and sit five points behind the Pittsburgh Penguins for that second Wild card spot in the East. Forward Tim Stutzle scored a goal and an assist while goalie Cam Talbot made only seven saves as the Sens outshot the Flyers in the contest 46-11. Felix Sandstrom made 41 saves in the losing effort for Philly.
  • The Boston Bruins clinched the President’s Trophy with a 2-1 overtime win over the Columbus Blue Jackets. Winger David Pastrnak scored his 53rd goal of the year just 41 seconds into the extra frame, giving the Bruins a franchise record 58 victories on the year, and 121 points, good for first place in the league and home-ice advantage throughout the entire Stanley Cup Playoffs. It’s the third President’s Trophy win for the Bruins since its inception in the 1985-86 National Hockey League Regular Season. Columbus has now lost three games in a row, and six of their last eight games overall, but thanks to a point earned by going past regulation, combined with a regulation loss from the Chicago Blackhawks, the Blue Jackets now sit a point ahead of the Hawks for last place in the NHL, a coveted spot as teams look to win the #1 overall pick in this summer’s Draft.
