NHL: Vegas Golden Knights vs Calgary Flames Odds Preview

The Golden Knights can reclaim third in Pacific with a win, Flames hope to break 3-game streak.

Uncover Exclusive Picks & Predictions From Our Experts.

The Vegas Golden Knights (35-23-7, 77 points) hope that their third period against the Seattle Kraken is a sign of things to come as they play the back end of their 2-game road trip when they slide into the Scotiabank Saddledome to face the Calgary Flames (31-29-5, 67 points).

The Flames have all but been officially eliminated from the postseason discussion, facing a 10-point deficit for the last wild card spot with 17 games to play. Oddsmakers opened Vegas as a -145 road favorite, but that number has been bet up to -150 with the total staying steady at 6.5 (under -115).

Puck drop is scheduled for 9:00 p.m. ET / 6:00 p.m. PT and can be seen on the SCRIPPS Network. Let’s start our Golden Knights vs Flames odds preview with a deeper analysis of both teams from a betting perspective.

Snatching Victory From the Jaws of Defeat

We’ve said it time and time again when it comes to handicapping games after the trade deadline, it’s going to take some time for new players and new NHL teams to gel.

The Vegas Golden Knights hope their comeback 5-4 win against the Seattle Kraken, on Tuesday, was where this team will start to come together to make a run at defending their Stanley Cup.

With the Knights goaltender pulled. Jonathan Marchessault scored with 16 seconds left to tie the score at four, and Jack Eichel potted the game winner in overtime to give the Knights a much needed 2-points after trailing 4-2 in the third period. Tonight’s match-up may not be the biggest hockey game today, but with just 17 games left, every two points is important for VGK right now.

For bettors, Vegas is 35-30 (-3.17 units on the season), 23-20 (-7.01 units as a favorite), and 15-18 (-5.28 units on the road). As a road favorite, Vegas is 9-9 (-3.50 units).

Hanifin Returns to Calgary

Of the three new additions to the Vegas lineup, former Calgary Flames defenseman Noah Hanifin (11G, 26A, 37 points) may be the biggest. The former Boston College Eagle is in his ninth season in the NHL but this move to Vegas could be the gateway to his first massive contract after the season.

Hanifin returns to Calgary after playing for the team for six seasons before the trade deadline deal with Vegas. The Flames are not going to make the postseason this season and one of the reasons for that is their lack of production on the power play.

The Flames are too soft which is part of the reason they don’t get many extra man chances, and when they do, they are 30th in the league with a 14.2% success rate! They do have some dangerous pieces in Nazem Kadri (22/34/56) on the top line and Blake Coleman (26/22/48) on the second, but in order to get back to the postseason, they’ll be looking for one or two big offensive names in free agency this Summer. For bettors, the Flame are 31-34 (-4.86 units) on the year with a 17-19 record (+0.35) as an underdog.

At home, Calgary Flames is 16-16 (-2.60), 7-7 as a home dog (+0.18 units). We could be looking at one of the more entertaining hockey scores tonight. Let’s finish off our Knights vs Flames odds preview with our official selection.

Tighter Game Than Most Think

When filling out NHL picks and parlay cards tonight, most will automatically give the Golden Knights the advantage in this one, but we don’t think we want to lay -150 with a team that has played one good period in an otherwise poor stretch of games.

We think the Knights are the better team, but the total gives us a more bankroll friendly option. Let’s give up -115 and take the under in a game that is scheduled to feature Adin Hill (17-8-2, 2.58, .917) and Jacob Markstrom (22-17-2, 2.68, .910) in net.

The Flames have scored just five goals in their last three games, while Vegas needs to clamp down defensively in order to have a deep playoff run, something they have not done while losing nine of their last 13 games.

We see the sneaky oddsmakers giving the under unexpected juice, encouraging the public to jump on the over when it’s all said and done even though early ticket count is even.
