Islanders Ready for More Normal Schedule, Looking to Make Noise in 2022-23

Panthers vs Islanders Betting Odds Preview: After starting the 21-22 season on the road for the first 13 games, the Islanders are getting four games at home to start 22-23.

Final Islanders and Panthers roster cuts have been made, locking us in for a brand-new season. Let’s dive into Thursday’s betting odds in this one by applying the same NHL betting strategies that allowed followers of this column to have another successful season. Both teams come into game one with new head coaches, and in the case of the Panthers, can the new faces help push the defending President’s Trophy winner deeper into the postseason?

New Look Panthers Look to Erase Bad Taste of 21-22

In 2021, Florida squeezed out a small 107-unit profit despite an overall 62-30 record. Over the last two seasons, the Panthers are 101-53, +921 units. They’ll head into this one as a small road favorite (-120), a spot where the Panthers were 23-14 last season, but not good enough to produce a profit (-49).

Continuing our Panthers vs Islanders betting odds preview: Last season, the Florida Panthers did everything but go deep into the postseason after getting swept in the second round by the Tampa Bay Lightning. Instead of simply running it back, General Manager Bill Zito acquired Matthew Tkachuk from Calgary while giving up fan favorite Jonathan Huberdeau and MacKenzie Weegar in return.

They also hired veteran Head Coach Paul Maurice who has never won a championship but has 23 years of head coaching experience on former interim Head Coach Andrew Brunette. For the second straight season. The Panthers posted a winning campaign for bettors but barely.

New York Islanders Back to Normalcy

The UBS Arena wasn’t quite ready to start the 2021 season, forcing the team to not see a game at home until the third week of November. New York started 5-6-2 but lost their last four games of the trip after clearly running out of gas. From that point on the Islanders went 32-29-8, missing out on the postseason for the first time since 2017-18.

There wasn’t a lot of movement on the New York Islanders roster cut, but Lane Lambert replaced Barry Trotz behind the bench after Trotz was fired in May. Lambert, who is a Trotz Padawan, will be making his NHL coaching debut. From a betting perspective, last year was the first season since 2017 that New York didn’t turn a profit for their backers (-1537 units).

Ilya Sorokin will get the start against Sergei Bobrovsky. Sorokin is now the clear #1 netminder after a .925 save percentage to go with a 2.40 GAA. Expect Sorokin to get better and for backup Semyon Varlamov to get moved at some point this season.

Bettors Will Be On Panthers

We thought New York would open as a small favorite at home, but all Panthers and Islanders betting odds prove that Lou Lamoriello’s team needs to do more to get the attention of the betting market. To conclude our Panthers vs Islanders betting odds preview we’ll turn our attention to the total.

With two new head coaches on both sides, one brand new, one thing is for sure, defense is the starting point for most coaches who are trying to establish their own identity. Barry Trotz wanted to win in New York with defense and we can’t think with the same line-up that a defensive mindset will change.

With Trotz, the under was 159-114 (+2699). No other team was more reliable in that span when betting under. The Winnipeg Jets were not an under team but expect the Panthers to take a few games to get used to Maurice and the new top-six combinations. Our official recommendation is to bet under 6 (-118).
