The Tide Continues to Rise in Raleigh

The Carolina Hurricanes return to home ice on Friday after beating the Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday night by a score of 4-3 in the shootout. The Canes peppered Lighting goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy with 55 shots on goal, with the Vezina winning netminder making 52 saves in regulation and overtime.

Forward Marty Necas continues to roll as he scored a power-play tally for his sixth goal on the season. The 24-year old Czechia native leads the club with 14 points. Also chipping in with an assist last night was 37 year old defenseman Brent Burns, who picked up an assist. He’s now the team leader in points for blueliners with eight over his first ten games.

Goalie Frederik Andersen made 23 saves in regulation and overtime, then stopped five of six shots in the shootout to earn his fifth victory of the year. With this being the second night of back to back games on the Carolina Hurricane schedule, we could see Antti Raanta get the start for Friday’s Sabres vs Hurricanes Head to Head matchup.

The Beat Goes On for Buffalo

The Buffalo Sabres continue to roll along with a solid start to the season, picking up their seventh win of the season on Wednesday night in dramatic comeback fashion over the Pittsburgh Penguins 6-3. The Penguins had a 3-1 lead just eight seconds into the start of the third period before they started showing signs of fatigue and taking some very bad penalties.

Buffalo sniper Tage Thompson, who is emerging as a top scoring threat in the National Hockey League this season, pulled the Sabres within a goal with his seventh tally of the season on the power-play. Forwards Victor Olafsson and Alex Tuch each scored to give Buffalo the lead and a pair of empty net goals solidified the comeback with five unanswered goals.

Goaltender Eric Comrie only needed to make 18 saves on 21 shots faced to pick up his fourth victory on the year and rookie defenseman Owen Power continues to shine at both ends of the ice. His two assists now give him five points early into the season.
