Tuesday’s Stanley Cup Recap and Preview
Stars, Oilers One Win From Advancing, Islanders Hanging Tough With ‘Canes

Tuesday Stanley Cup Playoff rolled on with results that were expected and one that was not when the New York Islanders went into Raliegh and forced a game six with a 3-2 win. Dallas shut out the Minnesota Wild as a -145 home favorite, while the Edmonton Oilers (-230) put a stranglehold on their series with the Los Angeles Kings after a 6-3 victory.
Both Edmonton and Los Angeles own 3-2 series leads. Let’s continue our Tuesday NHL Stanley Cup playoff recap and preview by going deeper with each game from a betting perspective and then look ahead to the two games on tonight’s MLB schedule.
Kings, Oilers Result, Win For Moneyline, and Total Bettors
We wish we could report good news for the public, but the books took two of the three games last night, with the Oilers’ result being the only positive, at least for moneyline bettors. The money backed the Oilers by a slight margin (52%), while 60% of the tickets had the Kings +1.5 (-145).
Mostly everyone (87%) had a winner with the over (6.5). A couple of notes for game six, which won’t be until Saturday, make sure you watch who will be in net for the Oilers. In game five, Stuart Skinner was the starter after taking over for Jack Campbell in game four.
Skinner made 25 saves but wasn’t tested much after giving up two first-period goals to Alex Iafallo and Adrian Kempe with 2:25 left in the first to cut the early deficit to 3-2. We imagine that Skinner will start again, but it’s important to keep an eye out during the morning skate. Expect Edmonton to be around a -170 road favorite.
Islanders Hold Off Elimination, Stars Black Wild
You have to give the New York Islanders credit. Down 3-1 in their series against the Metropolitan Division champion Carolina Hurricanes, it would have been easy for Lane Lambert’s team to go quietly on the road as a -160 dog, but instead, Ilya Sorokin made 34 saves and Sebastian Aho scored with 9:32 left to give the Hurricanes a 3-2 win.
To the veteran eye, this number looked a little suspicious but if you looked at it closer, both losses in Raleigh were one-goal games before the Islanders beat Carolina 5-1 in game three. In many ways, New York has to be a confident bunch. 65% of the moneyline wagers were on Carolina and 81% on the ‘Canes -1 ½. Game six is Friday in New York.
The Dallas Stars finally look like they have a handle on the chippy Minnesota Wild after shutting out the Wild, 4-0, to take a 3-2 series lead. The betting public was all over the Wild, both on the moneyline (63%) and puckline (75%). Game six is Friday in Minnesota.
Bruins and Oilers, Favored To Meet In Final
Updated Stanley Cup odds have the Boston Bruins as the overall favorite (+225) but a new number two has emerged. The Toronto Maple Leafs are the second favorite to win the Cup (+550) after taking three of the first four meetings from the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Game six is tomorrow in Toronto. We see 80% of the early money coming in on Tampa. The Leafs have won seven of their last eight games dating back to a four-game run to end the regular season. The Edmonton Oilers are still the top choice in the Western Conference to go to the Stanley Cup (+600), followed by the Colorado Avalanche (+750), and the Vegas Golden Knights (+900). If you still haven’t made a wager on the Stanley Cup, the key is seeing which team is taking the path of least resistance.
Tonight, Boston (-250) can close out the Florida Panthers, followed by the Colorado Avalanche trying to impose their will on the Seattle Kraken with the series tied 2-2. The Avs are a -185 favorite with 82% of the money on the Kraken and the plus money. That does it for our Tuesday Stanley Cup Playoff report. We wish you nothing but the best with tonight’s games.
