A Ridiculously Early Olympic Gold Medal Odds Preview
BetUs has gold medal odds on the 2024 Summer Olympics, the USA is a massive favorite.
The 2024 Summer Olympics will take place from the 26th of July to the 11th of August in 2024 in the metropolitan area of Paris, France. They won the bid for the games over Los Angeles in 2017, but the ‘City of Angels’ will host the 2028 Summer games. This will be the third time that France will host the Summer Games with London being the only other city to make that claim.
In a world where we argue whether baseball should be an Olympic sport, breakdancing will make its debut. There will be 329 events in 32 different sports. As the folks at Mattel figure out a way to get UNO on the slate in 2028, we take a look at the early Gold medal betting odds.
America a Massive Favorite As Usual
There will be more ways to bet on the 2024 Summer Games, but as of now, we have Gold Medal odds on the board. The USA is a -1000 favorite to cash their golden ticket for the seventh time in eight games. Since 1996, only one time (2008 in Beijing) has the U.S. not taken home the most gold medals. In the 29 total Summer Games they’ve participated in, the United States has won the most gold medals 18 times.
The next closest country is the Soviet Union with six. The biggest competition to the US dominance will likely be China (+500). In 2008, when China hosted the games, that also was the first and only time the Chinese have led the gold medal count. Following China is Japan (+5000) and Great Britain (+5500).
To give you an idea of just how dominant the Americans have been throughout history, the U.S. has won 1060 gold medals, or 665 more than Russia. Speaking of Russia, which has garnered the most gold medals six times, the International Olympic Committee is still trying to decide how or if Russian athletes can compete while the invasion of Ukraine continues.
Russia has been excluded from the betting board until there is clarity on their athlete’s participation. We continue our Olympic gold medal odds preview by looking at a couple of sports that may not be dominated by America.
Japan, China Must Dominate Gymnastics
In order for another country to challenge the US for the overall gold medal count, they must dominate in traditionally strong sports like gymnastics. The gold medal gymnastics count shows the Soviet Union with 39 gold medals, followed by Japan (33), and China (22).
America is fourth with 21 golds, but with Russia not included in the current odds it leaves two countries instead of three to dilute the American win total. Simone Biles and Victor Wembanyama have both been confirmed to be focusing on a return to the sport’s biggest stage. We conclude our Olympic gold medal odds preview with a look at swimming.
America Will Likely Add to Swimming Legacy
We really tried to find a way to recommend betting another country to win more gold medals than the U.S., but Track and Field, Gymnastics, and Swimming give out enough medals to solidify a -1000 winner. Nothing about that sentence felt right because we’d never recommend putting money on that big of a favorite. When it comes to swimming, the United States has collected 257 gold medals (579 total).
The next closest nation is Australia with 69 gold, and East Germany with 38. Of course, East Germany has been part of various cheating investigations. Over the last 19 games, America has won the most swimming medals 16 times and not since 1936 have they gone two consecutive years without being the leading medal count country. Don’t look for another country to break that gold medal swimming trend in France.
In closing, the United States will win the overall gold medal count but perhaps a very small wager on China is worth a shot but not likely. After the Summer Games, you may ask when is the next Winter Olympic Games? That will be in 2026 from Italy, we’ll see you then.
