Ukraine vs Argentina Head-to-Head
This is the first Ukraine vs Argentina Olympic soccer match, given Ukraine are tournament debutants. Since the Olympics became a U23 tournament, with a few exceptions, on the men’s side, Argentina are 5-3-1 in 90-minute matches against European teams.
Ukraine in Running for Quarters
The Ukrainians failed to capitalize on their opportunities in their first-ever Olympic match, where they fell 2-1 to Iraq last Wednesday. On Saturday, ten-man Ukraine managed to bounce back and take down Morocco 2-1 as +333 underdogs.
Goalkeeper Kiril Fesiun had a superb match, with five saves. Leading 1-0, Ukraine went down to ten men in the 63rd minute when Volodymyr Saliuk brought down Morocco’s Soufiane Rahimi in the box. Rahimi converted the ensuing penalty and Ukraine managed to grab an unexpected winner deep into stoppage time as Oleh Fedor set up fellow substitute Ihor Krasnopir.
Not many Olympic soccer predictions had Ukraine making it out of a group that Argentina and Morocco are still expected to go through. Ukraine are very much in the running and will automatically seal a spot in the knockout stage with a win.
A loss won’t be enough for Ukraine to go through but a draw might be, depending on the Morocco vs Iraq result. All but two players on Ukraine’s rosters play for Ukrainian clubs.
Plus, only Danylo Sikan and Maksym Talovyerov have appeared for the senior team. Coach Ruslan Rotan only called up Talovyerov and Dmytro Kryskiv as his overage players. They were both born in 2000, though and aren’t necessarily veteran presences.
Bettors should note Ukraine have only won one of their last five 90-minute matches.
Argentina Bounce Back After Morocco Fiasco
Argentina’s opening match transpired in comically absurd circumstances. La Albiceleste appeared to have equalized in second-half stoppage time against Morocco but the match was suspended due to pitch invasions and pyrotechnics by Moroccan fans.
When the match finally resumed two hours later, Argentina’s goal was called back due to an offside. So, after playing the three remaining minutes of stoppage time, Javier Mascherano’s Argentina, who the soccer betting odds listed as favorites, lost 2-1. Argentina bounced back on Saturday with a 3-1 win over Iraq and are now in first place in the group based on goal difference.
Substitute Kevin Zenon provided two assists and Thiago Almada and Julian Alvarez had excellent games. Mascherano’s tactics have certainly been questioned but Argentina have enough individual talent to bail them out.
Four different players have scored goals, according to the Argentina stats. While Man City’s Alvarez provided an assist for Almada on Saturday, he’s still looking for his first goal of the tournament. Bettors should be aware Argentina have conceded a goal in three straight games.
Ukraine vs Argentina Match Analysis & Odds
In the first meeting between these U23 sides, the Ukraine vs Argentina Olympic soccer odds list Ukraine as +375 underdogs. Argentina will be aware a draw is enough to advance, but not necessarily win the group, and one is priced at +300 odds.
Argentina, who have been favorites in all three of their group-stage matches, come in at -175 moneyline odds. Both of these teams have conceded in each of their first two games. Here, both teams to score is at -125, and over 2.5 goals sit at -129 odds.
This is a match that could be decided late on and both teams’ substitutes were impactful in their second game. Talovyerov, who plays for LASK in Austria, will likely replace the suspended Saliuk in Ukraine’s starting lineup.
While Argentina are one-goal favorites, Ukraine are implied to be more likely to cover here. Ukraine +1 shows +120 odds and Argentina -1 is at +160 as the winner of this match will advance.
