Australia vs USA Women’s Soccer: USA off to Dominant Start

But the Matildas are Coming off an Incredible Comeback

Australia Conceding at a High Rate

In one of the greatest comebacks in Olympic soccer history, Australia managed to turn a 5-2 deficit against Zambia into a 6-5 win. Australia will look to build on their victory when they take on the USA in the group stage closer on Wednesday.

The USWNT are off to a dominant start, with two wins and just one goal conceded. The Matildas may need a result against the USA to go through to the Quarter-Finals. But it certainly won’t be easy, especially since Australia have conceded eight times in two games.

Ahead of the match, we’ll preview the Australia vs USA women’s soccer odds.

Australia vs USA Head-to-Head

USA are 28-5-1 against Australia all-time and the USWNT’s only loss was in the 2017 Tournament of Nations. These teams last met in a 2021 friendly, which finished level at one goal apiece.

At Tokyo 2020, these teams played to a draw in the group stage and the USA won the Bronze Medal game 4-3 against the Matildas.

This will be the fourth Australia vs USA women’s soccer match at the Olympics and the USA are 1-2-0 in the previous three.

USWNT Silencing Critics

There were questions about the USA’s finishing ability heading into the Olympics. However, they’ve silenced their doubters so far. In their last match before the Olympics, the USWNT failed to score against Costa Rica. In two matches on the Olympics 2024 schedule, the USA have outscored their opponents 7-1.

Sophia Smith, a key forward, was an injury doubt for Sunday’s match against Germany but she returned in time for the game. Smith scored twice in the 4-1 victory as Mallory Swanson and Lynn Williams also got on the scoresheet. Swanson has scored three times in two matches and has been integral to the team’s success. The USA’s defense has also held up well, as they’ve only conceded once in six matches under coach Emma Hayes. However, Sunday’s Olympics 2024 news included an injury to center back Tierna Davidson. Davidson’s status for Wednesday’s match is unclear and Emily Sonnett could replace her.

The USWNT will advance to the Quarter-Finals no matter the result on Wednesday but will be looking for another victory. Trinity Rodman has been causing chaos on the right flank and Australia will likely have problems trying to contain her.

Defense a Massive Problem for Australia

Just 56 minutes into Australia’s match against Zambia, the Matildas had already conceded five goals. Australia managed to pull off an improbable comeback in the ensuing 34 minutes plus stoppage time but this game leaves them with questions defensively.

Left back Steph Catley did score two crucial goals en route to the 6-5 comeback victory but she is part of a backline that has conceded eight times in two games. Australia lost 3-0 to Germany in their Olympic opener and it easily could have been more.

Overs in Australia games have been some of the best soccer bets today but Tony Gustavsson may need to make some tactical adjustments. The Matildas look incredibly vulnerable on the counter-attack and the USA could exploit those weaknesses.

Australia are prone to conceding against the top teams in the world but the last two games have been puzzling. In five official matches in 2024 leading up to the Olympics, Australia had conceded just once. It’d be shocking if they get anywhere close to a clean sheet here given their defensive woes.

Australia vs USA Match Analysis & Odds

USA are -175 favorites for Wednesday’s match and it’s hard to bet against them given their first two Olympic wins. The USWNT will likely win the group no matter the result on Wednesday but don’t expect them to take their foot off the gas.

The Australia vs USA Women’s soccer odds list the USA as one-goal favorites. Bettors can take USA -1 or Australia +1 at -110 odds each. The Matildas are coming into this match knowing a loss may not be enough to get them through to the Quarter-Finals. If they draw, though, they’ll at least be one of the top two ranked third-placed teams and go through.

Australia are +380 underdogs, while a draw sits at +340. Under three goals show -125 odds but 11 goals were scored in the Matildas’ last game. USA have scored three goals in the first half of both of their matches so far and we think they can find success against an Australia side in disarray defensively.
