France vs Brazil Women’s Soccer: Host Favored With Marta Out

Brazil’s Marta Suspended for Quarter-Finals

Katoto Tearing it Up for France

This was supposed to be one last chance at gold for Brazilian legend Marta. However, her tournament may be over unless Brazil can win Saturday’s France vs Brazil women’s soccer Olympic Quarter-Final. Marta picked up a red card in the 2-0 loss against Spain and is out suspended.

Hosts France have an advantage, as a result, and their star striker Marie-Antoinette Katoto has been tearing it up. She leads the Golden Boot race, with five goals, and will look to add to her tally here. Ahead of this Quarter-Final match, we’ll go through the odds and take a closer look at the team news.

Renard Questionable for France

France survived a scare in their opening match of the Olympics. They scored three first-half goals against Colombia as Katoto was on the scoresheet twice. However, Colombia brought it back to 3-2 with 26 minutes to play and France hung on. In their second match, France did blow a lead.

Katoto put France up 1-0 against Canada but Les Bleues conceded twice in the second half, including in the 12th minute of stoppage time to fall 2-1. In that match, captain and defender Wendie Renard suffered a thigh injury that kept her out of the group stage closer.

Regardless, France defeated New Zealand 2-1 on Wednesday to finish in first place in Group A, given Canada’s six-point deduction for their alleged spying on other teams. France have only won one previous knockout stage match on their Olympic Games schedule, back in 2012.

France will be more vulnerable at the back if Renard can’t recover in time for Saturday’s match. She’s also a massive set-piece threat, at 6’2”. France have conceded in all three matches they’ve played at the Olympics and goalkeeper Pauline Peyraud-Magnin had some shaky moments in the group stage.

Heading into the knockout stage, France show the third-best odds to win gold, at +550.

Brazil Coping Without Marta

Almost everything that could go wrong for Brazil on Wednesday did go wrong. Marta inexplicably went for a flying challenge and kicked a Spanish player in the head. It was an obvious straight red card and Brazil’s all-time best women’s player inconsolably left the field.

Brazil keeper Lorena kept going down with injuries but soldiered on. However, Brazil coach Arthur Elias had made all of his subs when Antonia went down with an injury. She limped on for a fair few minutes but couldn’t continue and Brazil finished the match with nine players and a 2-0 loss.

In disheartening Olympic Games Paris 2024 news, Brazil defender Antonia is out for the rest of the tournament with a leg fracture. Lorena appears to be ready for Saturday but losing Marta is another big blow.

Brazil haven’t found any sort of consistency yet at the Olympics. They beat Nigeria 1-0 in their opener but fell 2-1 to Japan and 2-0 to Spain. Brazil snuck into the Quarters as the second-ranked third-place team.

While Marta has scored 116 international goals, no other active Brazil player is in the double digits. Marta is also a creative force who can break down defenses with clever through balls. Her absence is a big loss for Brazil and her international career could be over, unless Brazil find a way to advance.

France vs Brazil Match Analysis & Odds

If Renard can suit up for France, they shouldn’t have too many problems taking down a shorthanded Brazil side. The France vs Brazil women’s soccer odds currently list Les Bleues at a -135 moneyline price.

Meanwhile, Brazil are +320 underdogs and they’ll be hoping the 13th time’s the charm. In one of the most-anticipated soccer games today, we’d find it hard to bet against Katoto to get on the scoresheet. The Paris Saint-Germain striker is only 25 but is the club’s all-time top scorer.

While bettors can find France -1 at +185, Brazil +1 is at +105. While France are 8-4 in 2024, Brazil have compiled an 8-3-2 record but have only won three of their last eight games. Brazil are at risk of their first three-game losing streak since 2019.

A draw sits at +290 odds and six of the previous 12 meetings finished level after 90 minutes. As both teams have scored in each of France’s three matches so far, both BTTS and over 2.5 goals are priced at -135 odds.

Saturday’s winner will face Spain or Colombia in the Semifinals.
