Canada vs Germany Women’s Soccer: Injuries Play Pivotal Role
Germany Dealing With Injury Concerns on Defense

Last Two Olympic Champions Face Off
On the eve of the women’s Olympic soccer tournament, Canada coach Bev Priestmann was sent home. Their first opponents, New Zealand, spotted a drone in their closed practice session and Priestmann was suspended for the Olympics.
Despite the scandal, and a six-point deduction, defending champions Canada won all three of their group games to finish in second place in Group A. Now, they take on 2016 gold medalists Germany, who went 2-1 in Group B and have reached the Semifinals in four of their five Olympic appearances.
Ahead of this intriguing Quarter-Final matchup, we’ll take a look at the Canada vs Germany women’s soccer odds.

Canada vs Germany Head-to-Head
Germany have dominated this Canada vs Germany women’s soccer matchup. All-time, Germany are 15-2 against Canada. Still, Canada have won two of the last five after starting off this fixture 0-12.
They last met in the 2022 Arnold Clark Cup and Canada picked up a 1-0 win. Both teams have one win against each other in their Olympic history.

Canada Defy the Odds
The odds were stacked against Canada to reach the Quarter-Finals after they received an unprecedented six-point deduction. Just one loss would have meant a maximum of zero points and no chance to advance to the Quarter-Finals. Regardless, Canada managed to pick up three straight wins without their head coach and the defending champions are thinking about a fourth straight medal.
Canada may even be a value pick, as their soccer Olympics odds are +1400 to win gold. The players and assistant coach Andy Spence deserve a whole lot of credit for how they’ve responded to what could have turned into a disastrous tournament for them.
In their opening match, Canada fell behind New Zealand but pulled off a comeback with Cloe Lacasse and Evelyne Viens on the scoresheet. Then, in the match against France, Vanessa Gilles scored in the 12th minute of stoppage time to pull off another 2-1 comeback.
The group stage closer wasn’t as dramatic but Gilles scored again as Canada defeated Colombia 1-0 to advance to the Quarters. Canada have now won their last five 90-minute matches and are an unbeaten 10-4-0 in 2024. They’ve also prevailed in their last three quarter-final appearance and have built a whole lot of momentum.
Schuller Biggest Goal Threat for Germany
On the Group B Olympic Games’ 2024 schedule, Germany had matches against Australia, the USA, and Zambia. Germany’s 3-0 victory over Australia in their opener was certainly a statement win. However, they fell 4-1 to the USA in their second match and responded with a 4-1 victory over Zambia in the group closer.
Germany, at 2-1, finished in second place in their group, and they scored eight times in just three games. Lea Schuller had three of those goals and she, Alexandra Popp, Klara Buhl, and Jule Brand are all goal threats.
There are some injury concerns for Germany in defense, though. Center back Marina Hegering missed the final group game but we think she’ll be able to suit up on Saturday. Perhaps more concerningly, fellow center back Kathrin Hendrich went off in the first half of the Zambia match and had to be replaced by Sara Doorsoun.
Regardless, Germany have gotten on the scoresheet in 10 of their 11 matches and are tough to defend against. In 2024, Germany are 8-3 and they’ve advanced in their last four appearances in the Olympic Quarter-Finals.
Canada vs Germany Match Analysis & Odds
The latest soccer lines list this match as a pick’em and we do think it’ll be a close one. Each of the last three games between Canada and Germany have finished with a one-goal margin of victory. Canada pk sits at +115, while Germany pk comes in at -165 odds.
While plenty of current Canadian players were on the roster for their 2021 gold medal, Alexandra Popp is the only holdover for Germany. The Canada vs Germany women’s soccer odds still price Germany as +110 favorites for this one.
Canada show +200 moneyline odds but we wouldn’t be surprised to see the defending champions advance. Canada’s captain Jesse Fleming has played a key role so far, with a goal and two assists. The midfielder came through with the winning assist against Colombia and Canada will rely on her here.
While the over/under goal total is at 2.5 (over -175), a draw is priced at +275.
Still, none of the previous 15 meetings between these two sides have finished level. The winner of this match between two powerhouse women’s teams will take on either the USA or Japan in the Semifinal.
