Swimming Olympics

The Men’s 200m Olympics Freestyle is one of the most exciting events in the swimming portion of the Olympic Summer Games schedule.

In Tokyo 2020, there was a bit of an upset as British swimmer Tom Dean shocked many by grabbing the gold. His 1:44:22 time was just barely enough to put him on top of the podium over his teammate Duncan Scott, who grabbed a silver medal. The Brazilian Fernando Scheffer was the bronze medalist.

Here is how the swimmers placed in the final race:

Final Race Results
Swimmer (Country)Time
Thomas Dean (GBR) – GOLD1:44.22
Duncan Scott (GBR) – SILVER1:44.26
Fernando Scheffer (BRA) – BRONZE1:44.66
David Popovici (ROU)1:44.68
Martin Malyutin (ROC)1:45.01
Kieran Smith (USA)1:45.12
Hwang Sunwoo (KOR)1:45.26
Danas Rapsys (LTU)1:45.78

This year’s event promises to look quite different, however, as two of the medalists recently failed to qualify for this year’s games. Dean, the gold winner disappointingly failed to qualify at the British trials, but his teammate and silver medalist Scott will be in Paris this summer.

Matt Richards will be taking Dean’s spot for Great Britain. Scheffer, the Brazilian, also didn’t qualify, placing third in the Brazilian trials.

Popovici (Romania) and Hwang (South Korea) secured their spots to get another shot at medalling with impressive performances at their national trials. Lithuanian veteran Danas Rapsys also qualified at the World Championships. Kieran Smith joins the competition for the Americans once again as well.

New challengers are ready to make their mark, too. Australian Maximillian Giuliani and American Luke Hobson are potential podium threats, but they must first prove themselves.

Additionally, German Lukas Maertens has emerged as the world’s top performer this season with a stellar personal best, while China’s Pan Zhanle has added the 200m free to his Olympic lineup.

South Korean swimmer Hwang Sun-woo rose to the occasion at the Doha 2024 World Aquatics Championships, claiming his first world title in a long course pool.

The men’s 200m freestyle final saw Hwang strategically lead the race for the first 100 meters before facing a challenge from American Luke Hobson, who overtook him midway. However, Hwang displayed his strong finishing power with a late surge in the final 30 meters, ultimately touching the wall first in a time of 1:44.75.

This victory adds a long course gold medal to Hwang’s impressive collection, having previously secured two world championship titles in the short course version of the 200m freestyle. Hwang’s triumph not only marks a significant milestone in his career but also serves as a stepping stone as he sets his sights on medaling in Paris.

Romanian Popovici Can Win Gold

As just a 17-year-old, Popovici was already a swimming sensation and a future Olympic swimmer. At the World Championships in 2022, he achieved something unseen in nearly half a century – winning both the 100m and 200m freestyle titles.

This historic feat not only thrust the young Romanian swimmer into the spotlight but also cemented him as the second-youngest champion ever in the men’s 200m freestyle at the World Championships.

Later that year at the European Championships, he bested Cesar Cielo’s 13-year-old world record in the 100m freestyle, clocking in at an impressive 46.86 seconds. Following this performance, he capped off a remarkable competition by winning the 200m freestyle with a new world junior record time of 1:42.97.

This meteoric rise has set the stage for a potentially epic story of going from fourth place in Tokyo 2020 to the top of the podium in 2024. The swimming world eagerly awaits to see if the young Romanian can continue his record-breaking streak and grab himself a medal in Paris in the Men’s 200m Olympics Freestyle.
