Paris 2024 Olympics: France vs Spain For Soccer Gold!

Hosts France One Win Away From Gold Medal

European Powerhouses Meet for Chance at Gold

Hosts France entered the Olympic men’s soccer tournament as +225 favorites to win the gold medal. Now, Thierry Henry’s side are one win away from being crowned champions on home soil. A formidable Spain side, and breakout star Fermin Lopez, stand in France’s way on Friday, though.

For this France vs Spain gold medal game, the hosts are favorites but Spain could complete a perfect Summer. Their senior team won the Euros last month and the U23 side is one win away from gold. In a can’t-miss match, we’ll go through the odds and preview the action.

Head-to-Head:

Since the Olympics became primarily a U23 tournament, France and Spain have only met once in the competition. These teams drew 1-1 in the 1996 group stage and this is the first major tournament meeting since then.

Neither the French nor Spanish federations have permanent U23 teams. However, their U21 sides did draw 0-0 in a March 2023 friendly.

FRA Olise, Mateta Shining for France

France went over seven hours of play at the Olympics before conceding a goal. In the 62nd minute of Monday’s Semifinal, Egypt’s Mahmoud Saber stunned France and silenced the home crowd. However, Michael Olise played a perfectly weighted through ball for Jean-Philippe Mateta to smash into the back of the net just over two minutes later.

In extra time, Egypt went down to 10 players and Mateta scored a 99th-minute header. Olise then got a goal of his own in the second half of extra time to seal a 3-1 win. Mateta and Olise, former Crystal Palace teammates, have been at the center of France’s success in the knockout stage. Olise also sent in the corner kick that Mateta headed in for the lone goal against Argentina in the Quarter-Finals.

In the group stage, France won all three matches, with 3-0 victories over the USA and New Zealand and a 1-0 result against Guinea. Mateta has scored four goals in five matches, while Olise has shown why Bayern Munich were willing to fork out so much money for him by tallying six goal contributions.

In other good Olympic games news for France, starting midfielders Manu Kone and Enzo Millot will return from suspensions for the France vs Spain soccer gold medal match. Castello Lukeba and Loic Bade have also been nearly faultless at the back and Bade hit the post twice on headers against Egypt. If France win on Friday, it’ll mark their second Olympic soccer gold medal and first since 1984.

ESP Fermin Star of the Show for Spain

Spain entered the tournament with the third-best Olympic gold medal odds, at +275. They have two Euro 2024 winners on the roster, Fermin Lopez and Alex Baena. Lopez has been a standout player and has stepped up in the knockout stage.

Fermin picked up a botched clearance, after Adrian Bernabe made a marauding run into the Moroccan box, and finished to level Monday’s Semifinal at one goal apiece with 25 minutes to go. Fermin was involved again in the winning goal. He controlled a throw-in and played in substitute Juanlu Sanchez, who scored past the Moroccan keeper at a tight angle.

Sanchez is officially on the roster as an alternate and was only playing due to a minor injury to Diego Lopez. He’s certainly made his mark as Spain U23 are on to their second straight Olympic final. At Tokyo 2020, Spain lost 2-1 to Brazil in the gold medal game in extra time.

Fermin also scored twice in the dominant 3-0 win over Japan in the Quarter-Finals and the Barcelona attacker is one to watch here. Spain reached the knockout stage by finishing in second place in Group C. As Santi Denia rested some of his key players with a Quarters berth already confirmed, Spain lost 2-1 to Egypt in the group stage finale.

Still, they won 3-1 against the Dominican Republic and 2-1 over Uzbekistan. La Roja have averaged 2.2 goals per game and without any extra time minutes logged, they could be the fresher of the two sides on Friday.

Match Analysis & Odds

The crowd will be almost entirely behind France and that gives an unquantifiable boost to Les Bleus. For this France vs Spain soccer gold medal game, France are +135 favorites to win in 90 minutes. Spain won’t go down without a fight and they’ve scored at least twice in four of their five games.

La Roja are +210 underdogs and their defense will undoubtedly be tested by the likes of Olise, Mateta, and Alexandre Lacazette. Mateta and Lacazette are two of France’s three overage players and their physicality could cause some problems.

A draw sits at +210 odds and we wouldn’t be surprised to see this one decided in extra time or penalties. Spain are tipped to avoid defeat, at least in normal time, as Spain +0.5 comes in at -155 odds.

Under 2.5 goals show -175 odds but both teams have scored in every match they’ve played to this point. Both teams to score does show -110 odds and the most likely scoreline is implied to be 1-1, at +525 odds.

As Golden Ball candidates Olise and Fermin face-off, this should be one of the most exciting soccer games today.
