USA vs Germany Head-to-Head

On July 28th, USA scored three first half goals against Germany en route to a 4-1 victory to take control of Group B. Sophia Smith scored twice for the USWNT in the match, which was only the second game in women’s soccer Olympics history. In 2004, USA beat Germany 2-1 in the Semifinal, in extra time.

In this USA vs Germany women’s soccer fixture, the USWNT are 24-7-5 overall. Germany have only managed to win one of their last 18 meetings against the USA.

Rodman Sends USA to Semis

With key defensive midfielder Sam Coffey suspended, USA limped into extra time against Japan in Saturday’s Quarter-Final match. USA looked out of ideas, and energy, as they struggled to break Japan down in normal time. It took a brilliant piece of individual skill for the USWNT to break the deadlock. At the end of the first extra time period, Crystal Dunn found Trinity Rodman on the right wing with a long ball. Rodman cut back on her left foot and sent an unstoppable curling strike past Japan keeper Ayaka Yamashita.

That ended up being the game’s only goal as the USA are now in the Olympic Semifinals for the seventh time in eight tries. Through four matches on the Olympic games women’s soccer schedule, they’ve conceded only two goals. In the group stage, USA grabbed a 3-0 win over Zambia, defeated Germany 4-1 and took down Australia 2-1.

Coach Emma Hayes hasn’t been making many subs and it’s something that may catch up with the players. They looked a bit sluggish against Japan and almost allowed Australia back into the match in the group stage closer. While Coffey will be back for this one, center back Tierna Davidson missed Saturday’s match and is questionable to start on Tuesday.

Plus, right back Emily Fox went down with a serious looking knee injury at the end of the Japan match and could be replaced by Casey Krueger. Regardless, USA are unbeaten in 13 straight games and have conceded only two goals in Hayes’ eight matches in charge. Naomi Girma has been a standout player at the back and is a steadying presence.

Germany Knock Out Defending Champions

Germany coach Horst Hrubesch had a couple of injury concerns heading into the Quarter-Final match against Canada. However, both center backs Marina Hegering and Kathrin Hendrich were able to suit up and keep a clean sheet against the defending champions. Canada did have better chances in the match, and Germany managed to put just one of their 14 shots on target.

Regardless, Germany survived extra time and the match went into a penalty shootout. Goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger was Germany’s hero as she saved two penalties and converted the winning spotkick. In each of their last four Olympic appearances, Germany have managed to win a medal.

However, three of those medals have been bronze and the Germans are underdogs heading into Tuesday’s USA vs Germany women’s soccer match. Germany had no answer for the USA in the group stage but expect Hrubesch to make adjustments to make the game less wide open.

Germany proved they can defend against dangerous opposition on Saturday and also kept a clean sheet in a 3-0 win over Australia in the group stage. In their group stage closer, Germany also beat Zambia 4-1. Lea Schuller is one to watch for Germany, as she’s scored three goals at the Olympics so far.

USA vs Germany Match Analysis & Odds

It’s not easy to beat a team twice at the same tournament, especially not one of Germany’s caliber. USA defeated Germany in the group stage, as +125 favorites, and now the USWNT’s moneyline is at even odds. We expect Germany to make some adjustments and they’ll have to pay particular attention to Rodman, Smith and Mallory Swanson.

The trio has combined for seven goals at the Olympics and Rodman has scored in back-to-back games. Germany have struggled to take down the USA in recent times, especially in competitive matches. Germany’s last non-friendly win over the USWNT was in the 2003 FIFA Women’s World Cup Semifinal.

The 2024 Olympics odds currently list Germany as +280 underdogs and a draw is at +240. This one is certainly expected to be close, as Germany +0.5 sits at -130 odds.

Both teams’ Quarter-Finals matches went into extra time and their key players have logged a ton of minutes in a short amount of time. We expect this match to be played at a much slower pace than the group stage meeting.

Plus, it’s projected to be around 90 degrees at kickoff time, which should further slow things down. Bettors who think that may mean fewer goals can take under 2.5 goals at -118. While both teams will be playing for a medal regardless of the result, only one of them will contest gold against either Spain or Brazil.
