The Gold Medal Favorites Dominate
The United States women’s basketball team kicked off its quest for a historic eighth consecutive Olympic gold medal with a dominant 102-76 victory over Japan in their Group C opener.
Led by A’ja Wilson’s 24 points, 13 rebounds, and four blocks, the Americans showcased their dominance in the paint. Breanna Stewart contributed 22 points to the winning effort. With this victory, the U.S. extended its Olympic winning streak to an impressive 56 games.
Despite Japan’s aggressive three-point shooting strategy, the Americans proved too strong, pulling away in the second half. Brittney Griner, making her return to international competition after her ordeal in Russia, played a crucial role in the team’s success. Griner only played 16 minutes in the game but put up 11 points and nine rebounds.
For Japan, Maki Takada led the way on the offensive end with 22 points in 21 minutes of play. She only missed one shot in the game going 10-for-11.
France Makes a Statement
Host nation France made a strong statement in their opening game of the women’s basketball tournament, defeating Canada 75-54. Marieme Badiane led the French team with a game-high 13 points. Canada struggled offensively, shooting just 33% from the field and committing numerous turnovers. A particularly disastrous second quarter, where France outscored Canada 23-2, proved to be a turning point in the game.
Despite the loss, Canada will look to rebound against Australia on Thursday before concluding pool play against Nigeria on Sunday. The Canadian team features four WNBA players: Bridget Carleton, Kia Nurse, Laeticia Amihere, and rookie Aaliyah Edwards.
In a major upset, Nigeria defeated Australia 75-62 in their opening game. This victory marks Nigeria’s first Olympic win since 2004. Ezinne Kalu led Nigeria with 19 points, while Australia struggled to contain the Nigerian offense.
Germany made a strong impression in their Olympic debut, defeating Belgium 83-69. Nyara Sabally led the German team with 16 points before leaving the game due to an injury. Germany’s dominant performance showcased their potential as a rising force in women’s basketball.
We will continue to follow the women’s tournament so tune in for our next 2024 Olympics Women’s Basketball Update.
