AC Milan vs Atalanta Lines & Preview

Atalanta Catching Fire

Top Four Serie A Clash

AC Milan host Atalanta in one of the best matches of the weekend in any league. Atalanta head into this Lombardy Derby on a five game Serie A winning streak and have recently entered the top four. Last weekend, AC Milan lost in Serie A for the first time since falling to La Dea in December and they’ll be looking to bounce back. We could also see the in-form Charles de Ketelaere, on loan from AC Milan at Atalanta, play against his parent club. Ahead of the match, we’ll take a look at the AC Milan vs Atalanta lines and preview the match.

AC Milan vs Atalanta Head-to-Head

This is the third soccer betting opportunity on this fixture in the 2023-24 season. So far, Atalanta have defeated AC Milan twice, once in Serie A and once in the Coppa Italia Quarter-final. The January Coppa Italia match was the most recent meeting and Teun Koopmeiners scored twice in a 2-1 Atalanta victory at the San Siro.

In December, Ademola Lookman scored twice in a 3-2 Serie A win for Atalanta. The AC Milan vs Atalanta lines listed La Dea as +145 pregame favorites. This fixture is completely even over the last ten meetings, with four wins apiece and two draws.

AC Milan Lose, Advance to UEL Round of 16

All AC Milan needed to do on Thursday to advance to the Europa League round of 16 was avoid a three goal defeat. The Rossoneri managed to do that and Stefano Pioli even got to rest Olivier Giroud in the process. Milan lost 3-2 at Rennes on Thursday but picked up a 5-3 victory, on aggregate. While Benjamin Bourigeaud scored a hat trick for Rennes, Luka Jovic and Rafael Leao were on the scoresheet for Milan.

After Leao scored to make the game 2-2 and 5-2 on aggregate, Pioli pulled him, Christian Pulisic and Ismael Bennacer with Sunday’s match in mind. Last weekend, Jovic’s red card at Monza didn’t help the Rossoneri’s case as they fell 4-2 with ten men.

AC Milan are currently in third place in the Serie A standings, seven points ahead of fourth-placed Atalanta. If there are any conclusions that can be drawn from Milan’s last two losses it’s that they lack discipline at times. Between Jovic’s red card, which will keep him out of Sunday’s match, and the two penalties Milan conceded on Thursday, they’ve made some needless errors over the last few weeks.

The Rossoneri have also conceded at least two goals in five of their last seven matches overall. Thankfully, injured center backs Pierre Kalulu and Fikayo Tomori are getting close to making a return. They missed the match vs. Rennes but have reportedly resumed full training and Pioli hasn’t closed the door to a return on Sunday.

Atalanta Continue Run of Good Form

Atalanta got another victory by a three-goal margin last Saturday, when they took on Sassuolo. Mario Pasalic opened up the scoring for La Dea, in the 22nd minute, when he pounced on a rebounded shot. The man of the match was undoubtedly Atalanta goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi. The Italian shot stopper made a point blank save which he parried off the crossbar and later saved a penalty from Andrea Pinamonti. VAR judged that Carnesecchi left his line early, so the penalty was retaken.

Carnesecchi also saved the retake to preserve Atalanta’s clean sheet. In the second half, Teun Koopmeiners and Mitchel Bakker scored for La Dea as they picked up a 3-0 victory. The weekend before, Atalanta destroyed Genoa 4-1 on the road. On Atalanta’s five game Serie A winning streak, they’ve outscored their opponents by an average of three goals per game.

AC Milan loanee Charles De Ketelaere is tied for seventh in the Serie A stats with 12 goal contributions and he’s stepped up lately. Koopmeiners and Ademola Lookman have both scored seven Serie A goals. However, Lookman is out injured, along with defender Jose Luis Palomino. Over their last 13 matches overall, Atalanta are an impressive 11-1-1.

AC Milan vs Atalanta Match Analysis & Odds

This is expected to be one of the closest matches of the weekend, as AC Milan are slight +135 favorites. The AC Milan vs Atalanta lines also list visitors Atalanta, who are in excellent form, as +190 underdogs. Milan have conceded seven times in their last two matches, while Atalanta have scored seven goals in their last two. We certainly wouldn’t rule out a shootout in this one, although Atalanta have conceded just once in their last five.

At the moment, over 2.5 goals come in at -135 odds and that’s certainly not the worst pick on the odds board. Bettors may also want to consider a draw, at +260 odds. In this pick’em, Milan (pk -135) need to focus on limiting mistakes vs. an Atalanta (pk +115) side that will have no problems punishing them.

Olivier Giroud hasn’t started either of Milan’s last two matches but expect him to lead the line here. The Frenchman has been Milan’s most productive player this season, with 12 goals and eight assists. If De Ketelaere lines up for Atalanta vs. his parent club Milan, expect him to want to impress Pioli and show that he belongs in the Rossoneri team next year.
