Head-to-Head

This has been a largely unenjoyable fixture for AS Roma in recent seasons. They’ve lost four straight matches to Inter Milan and haven’t beaten the Nerazzurri since 2017. Inter outscored Roma 5-1 last season over two matches. The Nerazzurri won 3-1 at the San Siro and shut out AS Roma 2-0 in Rome. Prior to Inter Milan’s four-game win streak, there were six straight draws in the Inter Milan vs. Roma head-to-head.

Inter in an Unfamiliar Position

  • Serie A Record: 4-3, 12 pts, 7th
  • Serie A Form: L,W,L,W,L
  • Injuries and Suspensions: M Hakan ÇalhanoÄŸlu (Day-to-Day), M Marcelo Brozovic (Out), F Romelu Lukaku (Day-to-Day)

Inter Milan lost just four matches all of last season. Now, they have three losses in their last five Serie A matches and are stumbling down the table. Currently, Inter Milan are priced at +330 odds to win Serie A. They opened up the season as +175 favorites but their start to the season has left much to be desired. They come into Matchday 8, in seventh place and lost 3-1 to Udinese last time out.

It’s rumored Alessandro Bastoni is unhappy at Inter after Simone Inzaghi subbed him out after just 30 minutes. Granted, he was on a yellow card. Regardless, Inzaghi needs Bastoni at his best if Inter are to be in the title race this season. Shockingly, Inter have had one of the worst defenses in the league this season. They have conceded 11 goals through seven games and allowed three to Lazio, AC Milan and Udinese.

The Nerazzurri welcome another strong opponent to the San Siro on Saturday and can’t afford more defensive hiccups. Plus, their midfield is weakened now that Marcelo Brozovic is both suspended for the match and injured. Striker Romelu Lukaku and midfielder Hakan Çalhanoğlu are both questionable. The good news for Inter is that they’ve won all three of their previous home matches this season.

Roma Struggling to Finish Their Chances

    • Serie A Record: 4-2-1, 13 pts, 6th
    • Serie A Form: L,W,L,W,D
    • Injuries and Suspensions: D Rick Karsdorp (Out), M Lorenzo Pellegrini (Day-to-Day), M Georginio Wijanldum (Out), M Ebrima Darboe (Out)

AS Roma finished in sixth place in the Serie A standings last season. Heading into Matchday 8 of 2022-23, the Giallorossi are in the same position. Jose Mourinho will certainly be looking to push for a top-four finish in his second season as Roma coach. However, it’s been an up and down start.

Despite outplaying Atalanta, Roma dropped their last match before the international break, 1-0. Udinese also destroyed Roma 4-0 in early September. The defense has looked solid, apart from that match, but goalscoring has been a problem. Paulo Dybala and Tammy Abraham are a good one-two punch but the Giallorossi have just eight goals in seven matches. They’re underperforming their expected goals number by 6.8 goals. So, it may just be a matter of finishing off their chances.

The Giallorossi have been shut out in two of their last three matches but did miss Dybala vs. Atalanta. He’ll be back on Saturday and injured captain Lorenzo Pellegrini could join him. Defender Rick Karsdorp and midfielders Georginio Wijnaldum and Ebrima Darboe remain out. Still, Mourinho should be able to pick close to his best XI come Saturday.

Odds & Preview

The Inter Milan vs. Roma head-to-head stats show Nerazzurri dominance the last couple of years. Over the last two seasons, Inter Milan outscored Roma 11-2. The sense now is that Roma are a more competitive team but they do come into the match as +265 underdogs.

With six draws in the last ten fixtures, another draw sits at +280 odds. Meanwhile, Inter are even money favorites to get their fourth win in four at home. There’s been a stark contrast between the Nerazzurri’s home and away form. In away matches, they’ve conceded 10 goals and scored just six. At home, they’ve kept two shutouts and are averaging over two goals per game.

This has been a high scoring fixture as of late, with five of the last six matchups finishing with three or more goals. Over 2½ goals sits at -125 odds for Saturday’s match and both teams have scored in four of the last six meetings. With both sides hungry for a win, this is certainly the best match on the Serie A slate this weekend.
