The Middle East Swing
The Middle East swing on the women’s tennis schedule has become one of the go-to destinations for the world’s top players. The swing begins with the Mubadala Abu Dhabi Open, a WTA 500 event that is currently underway this week, and it concludes with the Dubai Duty Free Championships, a WTA 1000 event that is scheduled from February 19-25.
Eight of the Top 20 players descended on Abu Dhabi this week – Daria Kasatkina, Belinda Bencic, Australian Open runner-up Elena Rybakina, Veronika Kudermetova, Jelena Ostapenko, Beatriz Haddad-Maia, Anett Kontaveit and Liudmila Samsonova.
The tournament concludes on February 12.
The Qatar Total Energies Open promises an even stronger field with eight of the Top 10 players preparing to compete in the Arabian Gulf peninsula. Most notably, defending champion World No. 1 Iga Swiatek is expected to make her first appearance since losing to Rybakina in the Australian Open quarterfinals last month.
“Their desire to be a part of this tournament is a further confirmation of the reputation it has garnered over the years, the recognition of the organization, and the maximum attention to detail everyone involved in the tournament has always put into it.” Saad Al Mohannadi said [Source: WTA.com].
Bookmakers will release the Qatar Total Energies Open Odds following the draw reveal later in the week. That said, Swiatek is expected to be the player to beat in the WTA betting odds markets as she launches her title defense campaign.
