Alcaraz Gearing Up for Miami Defense

Newly-minted World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz has quite the to-do list in South Florida as he headlines this week’s Miami Open, tennis lineup.
The 19-year-old Spaniard is gearing up to defend his Miami Open presented by Itau Title, hold on to the No. 1 ranking and become only the eighth player to win the Sunshine Double as he comes off the back of a title-winning run in Indian Wells.
As per the latest Miami Open tennis odds, the World No. 1 and defending champion is the player to beat by a country mile. Beating Daniil Medvedev in Sunday’s BNP Paribas Open final in Indian Wells, the first ATP Masters 1000 event of the 2023 ATP Calendar, confirmed him at the top of this tennis betting market.

First Quarter: Alcaraz and Rune On Collision Course
Defending champion and top seed Alcaraz and No.7 Rune hug opposite ends of the first quarter, launching them on a path to a quarterfinal showdown should this section of the draw fall in line with the seedings.
The Spaniard will open his Miami Open tennis campaign in the second round against Facundo Bagnis or a #qualifier/lucky loser. In the R32, Alcaraz could come up against former World No. 1 and two-time Miami Open champion Andy Murray. Alternatively, No. 30 seed Maxime Cressy or Dusan Lajovic could emerge in this spot to challenge him.
By all accounts, Alcaraz should overcome any one of these early obstacles and reach the fourth round. Here, things could get a lot trickier with potential opponents including American and No. 16 seed Tommy Paul or compatriot and No. 20 seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.
Danish teenager Holger Rune is the highest seeded threat in the first quarter. Rune’s section is riddled with stumbling blocks, including No. 9 seed Taylor Fritz or No. 24 seed Diego Schwartzman – two players that loom as potential R16 opponents.
Before Rune can look that far ahead, he must overcome early challenges. In the R64, he will take on the winner of Marton Fucsovics vs Pedro Cachin. In the R32, he could face No. 31 seed Diego Schwartzman, Kyle Edmunds or Yibing Wu.
First Quarter Final Prediction: Alcaraz vs Rune
Second Quarter: Ruud and Rublev on Collision Course
No. 3 seed Casper Ruud has a lot of points to defend this week in Miami, having finished runner-up to Alcaraz in last year’s final. Ruud’s section is flanked by No. 6 seed Andrey Rublev, but includes dangerous floaters and top Miami Open tennis bets such as No. 10 seed Jannik Sinner and No. 13 seed Alexander Zverev.
Ruud will open his bid against Ilya Ivashka or a qualifier/lucky loser. The first seeded threat the Norwegian could face is No. 26 seed Botic Van de Zandschulp in the R32. However, the R16 looms daunting, with a potential date against No. 13 Zverev. The German is steadily returning to the kind of form that saw him establish himself as a bona fide Top 5 player. No. 22 Roberto Bautista Agut is another potential R16 opponent as is dangerous floater Taro Daniel and Emil Ruusuvuori.
The sixth seeded Rublev and 10th seeded Sinner are contained in the bottom section of the second quarter, set on a trajectory to meet in the R16. Rublev is slated to face the winner of American J.J. Wolf vs Alexander Bublik. In the R32, the first seeded threat is No. 25 Miomir Kecmanovic, though veteran Gael Monfils or Ugo Humbert are other potential third-round challengers.
In a perfect world, Sinner and Rublev will live up to their individual billing to set up a top-tier showdown in the R16. Other possible matchups could feature No. 21 Grigor Dimitrov and dangerous floater Fabio Fognini.
Second Quarter Final Prediction: Sinner vs Ruud
Third Quarter: Hurkacz and Medvedev On Collision Course
Russia’s Daniil Medvedev arrives in Miami on the back of a 19-1 run that includes winning three titles in a row since Rotterdam in February. Last Sunday’s loss in Indian Wells marked his first loss in over four weeks.
Medvedev, seeded fourth, will be keen to bounce back into the win column in Miami and towards that end, he has a relatively favorable draw. The Russian will face either Bernabe Zapata Miralles or Roberto Carballes Baena in the R64. No. 28 Yoshihito Nishioka is the first seeded threat that could challenge him in the R32. Whereas No. 15 seed Alex De Minaur or No. 19 seed Matteo Berrettini are the highest seeds that could challenge him in the R16.
No. 8 seed Hurkacz sits in the opposite corner of the third quarter, but his path to the quarterfinals could see him face American Ben Shelton in the R32. Shelton is the 32nd seed and an up-and-coming talent that is enjoying a fantastic run so far. In the R16, No. 11 Cameron Norrie and No. 17 Borna Coric are the top seeded threats in this section.
Third Quarter Final Prediction: Shelton vs Medvedev
Fourth Quarter: Auger-Aliassime and Tsitsipas On Collision Course
No. 2 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas will be looking to bounce back from a disappointing Indian Wells campaign that ended in a premature exit in his opening match. The top-ranked Greek leads the charge from the bottom half of the draw, in a fourth quarter that is flanked by Canada’s Felix Auger Aliassime, who is the fifth seed here.
Veteran Richard Gasquet is a potential first-round opponent. No. 27 seed Sebastian Baez is the first seeded-threat in his path. No. 18 seed Lorenzo Musetti or No. 14 seed Karen Khachanov are potential R16 challengers.
From the other side of this quarter, No. 5 Auger-Aliassime will open his bid against the winner of Thiago Monteiro vs Jason Kubler. In the R32, No. 25 Francisco Cerundolo could challenge the Canuck. Whereas American Frances Tiafoe, seeded 12th, lurks in this section as a likely R16 opponent. Other potential fourth-round challengers include No. 23 Daniel Evans, former US Open champion Dominic Thiem or dark horse Lorenzo Sonego.
Fourth Quarter Final Prediction: Khachanov vs Tiafoe
