Charleston Open Top Seeds, Favorites and Preview

World No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka has delivered the tournament a blow with her withdrawal due to an injury she picked up in Miami. The Belarusian joins World No. 1 Iga Swiatek on the sidelines after the Polish star withdrew last week from the Miami Open with an injury she’d picked up in Indian Wells. Therefore, the No. 1 seed tag in Charleston, falls to top-ranked American Jessica Pegula, who is still seeking her first title of the season.

Pegula will front a 56-player draw that includes World No. 5 Ons Jabeur and No. 9 Belinda Bencic, who won the title last year. This triplet features prominently on the WTA odds board, tipped as the top bets to win the title.

As well, rounding out the Top 8 seeds and betting favorites as per the Credit One Charleston Open odds board are Daria Kasatkina, Veronika Kudermetova, Victoria Azarenka, Ekaterina Alexandrova, and Magda Linette.

Elsewhere, Elena Svitolina receives a wild card as she returns to tournament play for the first time since having a baby. Also getting a wild card are Americans  Fiona Crawley, Caroline Dolehide, Emma Navarro and Sofia Kenin, one of the three former Grand Slam champions in the draw.

Charleston Open Draw Analysis

First Quarter: Pegula and Kudermetova Highlight

Top seed Pegula headlines the first quarter of the draw alongside fifth seed Kudermetova. The 29-year-old American  receives a bye into the second round where she’ll face the winner of Anna Bondar vs Anna Blinkova. In the R16, she could face her first seeded opponent, 15th seed Irina-Camelia Begu. Alternatively, former Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin, Aliaksandra Sasnovich or Dalma Galfi could emerge.

Kudermetova headlines the bottom half of this quarter, putting her on course for a first-ever meeting with Pegula should the draw fall in line with the seeding. The Russian begins her campaign in the R32 against either Diana Shnaider or Alycia Parks. In the R16, 12th seed Paula Badosa, who is among the top favorites on the Credit One Charleston Open odds board, represents one of her toughest tests. Other potential challengers in the fourth round include 2021 US Open runner-up Leylah Fernandez, Evgeniya Rodina or Sherif Mayar.

Quarterfinal Prediction: Badosa vs Pegula

Second Quarter: Bencic and Alexandrova Highlight

Defending champion Bencic (fourth seed) headlines the second quarter of the draw alongside Alexandrova (seventh seed) and both players receive a bye into the second round.

Bencic will open her title defense campaign against American hopeful Lauren Davis or a qualifier. In the R16, 13th seed Danielle Collins looms as a potential opponent. Collins is a dangerous floater and an Australian Open finalist. Alternatively, power-players Shelby Rogers or Julie Niemeier could emerge from this section to challenge Bencic for a spot in the quarterfinals.

Alexandrova begins her campaign in the R32 against either Yulia Putintseva or Svitolina. In the R16, her toughest test could come from 10th seed Shuai Zhang. Alternatively, Julia Grabher or one of two qualifiers could emerge as potential fourth-round opponents.

Quarterfinal Prediction: Collins vs Alexandrova

Third Quarter: Kasatkina and Linette Highlight

Third seed Kasatkina headlines the third quarter of the draw alongside eighth seed Linette as the top two seeds in this section.  Kasatkina receives a bye into the second round where she’ll face the winner of Madison Brengle vs Kaia Kanepi. No. 16 seed Marie Bouzkova looms as the first seeded test in her path to the quarterfinals. Other R16 opponents include Americans Claire Liu or Bernarda Pera and Spain’s Cristina Bucsa.

Quarterfinal Prediction: Bouzkova vs Keys

Fourth Quarter: Jabeur and Azarenka Highlight.

Second seed Jabeur and sixth seed Azarenka flank opposite ends of the fourth quarter and both players receive a bye into the second round.  Jabeur , a finalist in Charleston last year, will face either Lesia Tsurenko or a qualifier. In the R16, she could take on  14th seed Jil Teichmann, wild card Dolehide or dangerous floater Linda Fruhvirtova.

Azarenka begins her campaign in the R32 against either former US Open champion Sloane Stephens or a qualifier. In the R16, 11th seed Anhelina Kalinina looms as her biggest test. Other potential fourth-round challengers include Anna Kalinskaya, veteran Alize Cornet or wild card Crawley.
