Gauff, Sabalenka Betting Favorites At WTA Stop in Toronto

Swiatek's Withdrawal Means Gauff, Sabalenka Fave's by 2024 WTA National Bank Open Odds

Pegula Looks to Become First Back-to-Back Winner in Canada Since 2000

The preparations for the upcoming Tennis US Open are starting to heat up with the next event on the WTA schedule taking place in Toronto.

The 2024 WTA National Bank Open odds are headlined by No. 1 seed Coco Gauff and No. 2 seed Aryna Sabalenka.

With Gauff leading the way, four of the top eight seeds are Americans. That includes defending champion Jessica Pegula. Pegula is priced at +1400 to win the title in Toronto.

The tournament comes right after the Olympics and that led to the withdrawal of multiple prominent players and that could impact the WTA live rankings.

That leaves Sabalenka, the 2024 Australian Open champion, as the only player to win a women’s Grand Slam singles title in the field.

  • With the only Grand Slam tournament left in 2024 being the US Open, Gauff has +200 odds to reach the final in New York with +600 Tennis odds for Pegula to be the same. (Gauff comes in at +375 in Toronto, with Pegula at +1400).

Toronto Loses Plenty of Star Power

It is not an easy task for a tournament director to be the tournament featured immediately following the Olympics.

Seven players withdrew from the tournament including the last two Grand Slam champions as French Open champion Iga Swiatek and Wimbledon winner Barbora Krejcikova pulled out of the event.

No. 4 Elena Rybakina, who continues to deal with bronchitis, is also out of the tournament. That had quite an impact on the 2024 WTA National Bank Open odds.

“I’m sorry to announce that due to overall fatigue caused by the last couple of weeks on the court, I need to withdraw from the tournament in Toronto,” said Swiatek who won the bronze medal in singles at the Paris Olympics.

“Due to an intense tennis schedule with the Olympics taking place this year and changing surfaces, I need more time to rest and recover in order to be ready to play the US swing in good health and at my best possible level. Looking forward to playing in Toronto next time!”

  • No. 5 Jasmine Paolini, No. 8 Maria Sakkari, No. 9 Danielle Collins, No. 18 Marketa Vondrousova, and No. 26 Caroline Garcia are others who won’t be playing in Canada.

Americans Sofia Kenin, Sloane Stephens, and Shelby Rogers join Karolina Pliskova and Zhang Shuai as players who gained direct entry into the main draw. Former world No. 1 Naomi Osaka is among the players who received wild cards into the tournament.

Gauff Looks to Win First Title in Canada

After a disappointing showing at the Olympics, Gauff was handed a challenging draw in Toronto.

The 2024 WTA National Bank Open odds have Gauff as one of the top contenders. She could get fellow American Sofia Kenin in the second round with either Ons Jabeur or Naomi Osaka potentially waiting in the quarterfinals.

Diana Shnaider is the other seeded player in this portion of the draw. Gauff has reached the quarterfinals at this tournament in each of the last three years but could get no further.

Osaka was a quarterfinalist at the 2019 Rogers Cup in Toronto. Since then, she has played in Canada just once when she retired in the second set against Kaia Kanepi in 2022.

Pegula Looks To Go Back-to-Back

Could it be an all-American semifinal?

Jessica Pegula is seeded third. There could be a possible second-round showdown with Karolina Pliskova.
Fan favorite Leylah Fernandez, who is the No. 15 seed, could be lurking.

The bottom half of that quarter is headlined by No. 7 seed Madison Keys with Sloane Stephens and No. 12 seed Victoria Azarenka among the players that Keys might run into. Keep that in mind when looking at the 2024 WTA National Bank Open Odds.

Pegula won last year’s tournament after surviving tough, three-set matches in the quarterfinals against Gauff and against top-seeded Swiatek in the semifinals.

With rain impacting the Tennis schedule, Liudmila Samsonova had to play two matches on two separate days. When looking at WTA tennis scores, after outlasting Elena Rybakina in the semifinals, she was on the court two hours later and had little left against Pegula.

  • Martina Hingis is the last player to win back-to-back titles at the Canadian Open as she accomplished the feat in 1999 and 2000.

Can Navarro Make a Run in Toronto?

A quarterfinal showdown between No. 4 seed Jelena Ostapenko and No. 8 seed Emma Navarro could be interesting.

However, this draw has dangerous floaters including Canadian Rebecca Marino, American Shelby Rogers, Elena Svitolina, and Paula Badosa. Badosa is coming off a run to the title in Washington, D.C.

When looking at the tennis stats, Navarro has a chance to move into first place on the WTA tour in Tennis match wins during the tournament.

Don’t forget about seeded players Marta Kostyk and Dayana Yastremska.

  • Navarro is one of the seeded players set to head to Toronto after playing in the Olympics. Navarro fell in three sets to eventual gold medalist Qinwen Zheng.

While many of the best players in the world headed to the Olympics, No. 2 seed Aryna Sabalenka got a head start on the North American hard-court season by playing in Washington.

She looks to use her strong play in Washington to make a run at her first title in Canada.

The first seeded player she could see is No. 13 Beatriz Haddad Maia who was a singles finalist the last time the tournament was played in Toronto.

Bianca Andreescu, the 2019 champion, is also in the draw. It won’t be an easy road for one of the Canadian players in the tournament with a first-round match with Lesia Tsurenko and then likely facing No. 10 seed Anna Kalinskaya.

If she wins those two matches, No. 5 seed Daria Kasatkina could be waiting.
