Injuries Could Impact the Men’s Field in Cincinnati
2024 ATP Cincinnati Open Odds Has Sinner and Alcaraz as Top Contenders
Four Former Champions Headed to Cincinnati for Next US Open Series Event
There are more questions than answers heading into the next event in the North American hard-court circuit with defending champion Novak Djokovic opting not to defend his title in Cincinnati while top-seeded Jannik Sinner and No. 6 Casper Ruud are dealing with injury concerns.
The 2024 ATP Cincinnati Open odds have Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz as the top contenders.
Citing fatigue after his run to the Olympic men’s singles title, Djokovic will not attempt to defend his title in Cincinnati meaning that the last back-to-back men’s singles champion in Cincinnati was Roger Federer in 2014 and 2015.
Grigor Dimitrov, Daniil Medvedev, Alexander Zverev, and Borna Coric will give the field four former champions. This will be the first time since 2001 that a Cincinnati men’s singles draw won’t feature at least one of the Big Four of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic or Andy Murray.
Since 2007, they have combined to win the tournament 12 times and reached the final 19 times.
Alcaraz leads the way at +150 in the odds of winning the title in Cincinnati followed by Jannik Sinner at +22- and Daniil Medvedev at +800.
Currently, eight of the top 10 players in the ATP rankings are in the field.
This is the last of the ATP 1000 events before the US Open, the final Grand Slam tournament of 2024. The ATP tennis odds have Alcaraz favored at +137 to win the US Open with Sinner (+225), and Medvedev (+500) other top contenders among the players entered in the Cincinnati tournament.
The best matches in the first round could include the Gael Monfils-Alexei Popyrin, Holger Rune-Matteo Berrettini, Frances Tiafoe-Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, Marcos Giron-Sebastian Baez and Karen Khachanov-Francisco Cerundolo showdowns.
Will Sinner be Ready to Make a Run?
Jannik Sinner appeared to be dealing with a hip issue, an injury that the world’s top-ranked player had to contend with in the past, in a loss to Andrey Rublev in the Montreal quarterfinals. Will that have an impact in the 2024 ATP Cincinnati Open odds?

If Sinner remains in the field, the Cincinnati quarterfinals could be a rematch between Sinner and Rublev.
Ugo Humbert could see Sinner in the third round if he gets by Jordan Thompson and then either Marcos Giron or Sebastian Baez. Sinner and Humbert haven’t met since 2021 when Sinner dropped just six games in two sets at the Italian Open.
American Taylor Fritz, who is coming off a second-round loss to Sebastian Korda in Canada, could face Rublev with a spot in the quarterfinals at stake. Including a three-set win in Cincinnati two years ago, Fritz is 5-3 against Rublev. Their only meeting in 2024 was a 6-4, 6-3 win by Rublev in Madrid. That is something to consider when looking at the tennis betting options.
Tough Draw for Zverev
No. 3 seed Alexander Zverev wasn’t handed the easiest of roads to win another title in Cincinnati. He received a first-round bye before the 2021 Cincinnati champion faces either Karen Khachanov or Francisco Cerundolo with the possibility of a third-round showdown with American Sebastian Korda.
If he gets to the quarterfinals, either No. 8 seed Grigor Dimitrov or No. 12 seed Ben Shelton could be waiting.
After an ankle injury kept Zverev from defending his title in 2022, Zverev reached the semifinals in 2023 before dropping two tight sets to eventual champion Novak Djokovic.
Zverev did dispatch Khachanov in straight sets in Miami back in March as he hasn’t lost to Khachanov since 2018. Cerundolo upset Zverev in Madrid earlier this year.

Medvedev and Hurkacz Could Clash in Quarters
Hubert Hurkacz has spent quite a bit of time on the court in Montreal as he won his first matches in three sets before losing to Alexei Popyrin in the quarterfinals. He is just 2-2 in U.S.-based events this year.
Hurkacz did have a solid showing in the 2023 Cincinnati event with wins over seeded players Borna Coric and Stefanos Tsitsipas before falling in the semifinals against top-seeded Carlos Alcaraz.
The first seeded player that Hurkacz might run into is American Tommy Paul as he looks to become the first U.S.-born men’s player to win in Cincinnati since Andy Roddick in 2006.
Daniil Medvedev, the 2019 champion, and Lorenzo Musetti could clash in the third round with the winner drawing Hurkacz in the quarterfinals. However, Nicolas Jarry, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, American Frances Tiafoe, Jiri Lehecka, and Mariano Navone are unseeded players who could have something to say about that.
Alcaraz Eyeing First Title in Cincinnati
Ruud just pulled out his third-round match against American Sebastian Korda so keep an eye on his status for the tournament in Cincinnati.
His first match could come against former top-10 player Felix Auger-Aliassime who is coming off a disappointing showing in his hometown of Montreal.
The always dangerous Stefanos Tsitsipas could be waiting in the next round.
Did we mention that No. 2 seed Carlos Alcaraz, a 2023 singles finalist in Cincinnati and a front-runner in the 2024 ATP Cincinnati Open odds, could be waiting in the quarterfinals if he navigates through a draw that includes No. 15 seed Holger Rune or Alexei Popyrin, who upset Ben Shelton and Grigor Dimitrov to reach the final in Montreal?

A Quick Look Back
Defending champion Borna Coric was seeded 15th and his bid to repeat in Cincinnati ended with a loss to unseeded Hubert Hurkacz in the second round.
Only two of the top eight seeds advanced to the quarterfinals.
Top-seeded Carlos Alcaraz played four straight three-set matches while No. 2 seed Novak Djokovic lost a total of 16 games on his way to the title match Perhaps that was the difference as Djokovic won the second and third sets in tiebreakers to win for the third time in Cincinnati. The match lasted for nearly four hours and was the longest match in tournament history.
No. 6 seed Holger Rune retired in his second-round match while No. 11 seed Karen Khachanov withdrew before the tournament started.
With Taylor Fritz falling to Djokovic in the quarterfinals, no Americans were in the semifinals for the sixth year in a row.
