Could Swiatek and Sabalenka Meet in Finals, Second Week in a Row?

Americans Pegula, Gauff Look to Make Deep Runs in Madrid Event

Surprise, surprise, World No. 1 Iga Swiatek is favored once again as are some of the other top players on the WTA tour converge in Madrid.Aryna SiarhiejeÅna is the closest thing to a front-runner in the field. They just met in the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix final in Stuttgart with Swiatek winning in straight sets. She is the clear front-runner according to the Mutua Madrid Open betting odds as the clay court season begins to heat up.

Even the qualifying draw is interesting to watch with Sara Errani, a former French Open singles finalist, and Eugenie Bouchard, who reached the Wimbledon final in 2014, among those still in contention to secure spots in the main draw.

When looking at the tennis odds, Swiatek (-120) is the overwhelming favorite in the French Open outrights followed by Ons Jabeur at +900.

Americans Lauren Davis, Shelby Rogers, Claire Liu, Sofia Kenin, and Katie Volynets will all be in action when the main draw gets underway on Tuesday.

Three-time champion Petra Kvitova is joined by Sabalenka and Jabeur, who won the title in Madrid in 2021 and 2022.

WTA Players to Watch

Iga Swiatek

Swiatek is 20-4 so far in 2023 as she is building on an impressive 2022 campaign. She dropped just one set in winning in Stuttgart last week. Now she is the clear favorite according to the Mutua Madrid Open betting odds.

A potential showdown with 2021 US Open singles champion Emma Raducanu could be waiting in the second round. They met last month in Indian Wells with Swiatek winning with ease. American Bernarda Pera is among the seeded players in Swiatek’s quarter.

Aryna Sabalenka

Sabalenka has had some mixed results since winning the Australian Open title. She reached the final at Indian Wells before falling to No. 74 Sorana Cirstea in the quarterfinals at the Miami Open.

If Cirstea gets by American Lauren Davis in the first round, she will have a rematch with the second-ranked Sabalenka with Petra Kvitova potentially lurking later in the draw.

When looking at the Mutua Madrid Open betting odds, Sabalenka is priced at +617 to win in Madrid. She did win the tournament in 2021 and will look to make it two titles in three years.

Jessica Pegula

Pegula is looking for her first tournament title of 2023. However, she takes a 22-7 record into this tournament.

Pegula has made the quarterfinals in four of the last five Grand Slams and is looking to take that next step.

Pegula had some impressive wins in the build-up to the 2022 French Open.

The No. 3 seed, who has +1171 odds to win her first singles title of 2023, could meet up with Elina Svitolina or Marie Bouzkova in the third round and if the seeds hold true to form, she would get Swiatek in the semifinals. The WTA odds would certainly list her as the underdog in that match.

Ons Jabeur

Jabeur had to retire in the semifinal match with Swiatek in Stuttgart so keep an eye on her form early in the tournament as she jumps right back into action in her busy tennis schedule.

Jabeur won the title at Charleston, taking out No. 8 Daria Kasatkina in the semifinals and 11th-ranked Belinda Bencic in the final.

That might have been the boost of confidence she needed after losing her second match in Indian Wells to a player outside the top 100 and then falling to qualifier Varvara Gracheva in her first match in Miami. Jabeur also had an early exit at the Australian Open.

Still, she is priced at +1300 to take the title in Madrid. She knows how to win on those courts after taking the 2022 singles title with a three-set win over Pegula.

Elena Rybakina

Rybakina (+1185) is challenging Pegula and Jabeur for the third-best odds in the field.

Rybakina is another of the contenders who retired during a match in Stuttgart.

She is a dangerous player as evidenced by her straight-set wins over Swiatek and Sabalenka to win the title at Indian Wells. She followed that up with a run to the final at the Miami Open before falling to Kvitova.

The biggest win of 2023 was an upset of Swiatek in the Round of 16 at the Australian Open. Her run in Melbourne ended with a three-set loss to Sabalenka in the title match.

Rybakina is seeded seventh in Madrid and that could make for a difficult road.

Others to Watch

Paula Badosa (+1600) and Coco Gauff (+1914) could meet up in the third round which would result in one of the top 10 contenders exiting the tournament early on.

Barbora Krejcikova (+1842) could meet up with Bianca Andreescu early on while No. 5 seed Caroline Garcia (+3842) does seem to be a little undervalued in the tournament.

Daria Kasatkina and Maria Sakkari are the other top-10 seeds in a loaded field.
