American Amanda Anisimova has withdrawn from the tournament after being injured while training in Mexico.

The tennis odds have Iga Swiatek at +275 and Aryna Sabalenka at +333 as the favorites to win in Indian Wells, followed by Rybakina at +550.

The main draw begins on Wednesday, with the 32 seeds all receiving first-round byes. The tournament concludes on Mar. 17 before the players head to Miami for another two-week event on the hard courts.

Swiatek Eyeing Another Indian Wells Title

When looking at the WTA scores, Swiatek’s bid to win back-to-back titles in Indian Wells ended with a 6-2, 6-2 loss to eventual champion Rybakina in the semifinals after posting seven consecutive straight-set wins at the tournament dating back to the 2022 event.

Swiatek is listed by the women’s BNP Paribas Open odds as the favorite.

Swiatek could draw American Danielle Collins in her first match, while fellow American Madison Keys could be a potential foe in the fourth round.

Ons Jabeur, Jelena Ostapenko, Veronika Kudermetova, and Donna Vekic are other seeded players to watch in Swiatek’s portion of the draw.

Swiatek topped Rybakina to win the title in Qatar last month before falling in the semifinals at the tournament in Dubai.

Don’t Overlook The Australian Open Champion

Not much has been heard from Aryna Sabalenka during her impressive run to the Australian Open singles title.

The second-ranked player in the WTA rankings lost 6-0 in the third set to Donna Vekic in her first match in Dubai, and now she is looking to make some noise in Indian Wells after reaching the finals in the 2023 event.

Sabalenka is among the top contenders according to the women’s BNP Paribas Open odds.

The first-seeded player Sabalenka could run into is Dayana Yastremska, a surprise semifinalist at the Australian Open.

Americans Jessica Pegula and Emma Navarro are among the seeded players in Sabalenka’s portion of the draw, along with former Indian Wells finalist Maria Sakkari, Elina Svitolina, Caroline Garcia, and Leylah Fernandez.

What About the Defending Champion?

Rybakina rebounded from a surprising second-round loss to Anna Blinkova at the Australian Open by winning the title in Abu Dhabi and advancing to the final in Qatar. However, she had to pull out of her scheduled quarterfinal match with Jasmine Paolini in Dubai, so it remains to be seen how she will look heading into this tournament.

It could be a tough road for the No. 4 seed, with dangerous floater Paula Badosa being joined by ranked players Marketa Vondrousova, Beatriz Haddad Maia, and Paolini as foes that could challenge Rybakina in her quest to become the first player to win back-to-back WTA singles titles in Indian Wells since Martina Navratilova in 1990 and 1991.

Ready to Go Coco About Coco?

Coco Gauff is the top-seeded American, looking to become the first U..-born player to win the women’s singles title in Indian Wells since Serena Williams in 2001.

That came during a stretch when Americans won six titles in a nine-year span.

Since Lindsay Davenport advanced to three straight finals from 2003-05, there has only been one finalist from the U.S.

A potential quarterfinal against Australian Open finalist Qinwen Zheng could be one of the most anticipated matches in the tournament.

Two-time Indian Wells champion Victoria Azarenka joins Daria Kasatkina and Liudmila Samsonova as other seeded players to watch in Gauff’s quarter of the draw.

Gauff has been eliminated by players outside the top 30 in each of her last two tournaments.

There are not only 13 Americans who gained direct entry into the tournament, but eight other U.S. players reached the final round of the qualifying draw.

A Quick Look Back

Rybakina was flying a bit under the radar entering the 2023 event in Indian Wells as the No. 10 seed. She needed to win a pair of tiebreakers in her first tennis match against American Sofia Kenin before eliminating No. 21 seed Badosa, the 2021 Indian Wells champion.

Rybakina was pushed to the limit by Karolina Muchova in the quarterfinals before dispatching Swiatek 6-2, 6-2 in the semifinals.

Six unseeded players were in the Round of 16, but none advanced to the semifinals.

Sabalenka had dropped a total of nine games in beating Gauff in the quarterfinals and Sakkari in the semifinals. Her chance to win the title ended when she fell 13-11 in the first-set tiebreaker as Rybakina closed out the match in straight sets.
