US Open Futures Betting: Defending Champs Alcaraz and Swiatek & Current Favorites

Can American Stars Make Presence Felt in Final Grand Slam Event, 2023?

Can US Open Have Back-to-Back Men’s & Women’s Champions 2023?

There will be a chance for the world’s top players to catch their breath after the two 1000 events and before the start of the US Open. The results in Canada and in Cincinnati have done little to impact the US Open futures betting odds.

While Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic have been taking care of business in the Masters 1000 event in Cincinnati, some of the other top players haven’t been as fortunate with Stefanos Tsitsipas and Jannik Sinner among the players failing to reach the quarterfinals as there were plenty of surprising tennis scores in Cincinnati.

No. 11 seed Karen Khachanov and former World No. 1 Andy Murray both pulled out of the Cincinnati tournament with sixth-seeded Holger Rune retiring in his first match due to a back issue. Murray won the US Open in 2012.

On the women’s side, each of the top five seeds reached the Round of 16. However, former US Open champion Sloane Stephens did knock No. 6 seed Caroline Garcia out of the Cincinnati event.

Alcaraz and Iga Swiatek won their first US Open titles in 2022. The last time there were back-to-back men’s and women’s singles champions in the same year came in 1996. In that year, Pete Sampras won the fourth of his five US Open titles. Steffi Graf won the last of her five championships in New York.

When it comes to the tennis schedule, the next men’s tournament is the 250 event in Winston-Salem, N.C. with WTA events in Cleveland and Chicago.

The US Open is set to start on Aug. 28.

The Fight for No. 1

There isn’t much to separate Alcaraz and Djokovic when it comes to the US Open futures betting odds.

Alcaraz is priced at +120 to win the US Open for the second straight year.

Six of the top eight seeds were out before the quarterfinals and that led to Alcaraz, the No. 3 seed, topping fifth-seeded Casper Ruud in a four-set championship match.

Djokovic was not able to compete due to guidelines for foreign players who had not received a COVID vaccination.

Alcaraz needed five sets to dispatch American Frances Tiafoe in the semifinals.

Alcaraz and Djokovic engaged in a classic final at Wimbledon and are looking to meet in a second straight Grand Slam.

Swiatek Eyeing Repeat

There has been no back-to-back women’s singles champion since Serena Williams topped Victoria Azarenka in 2013 final and Caroline Wozniacki in 2014.

That could change considering that Swiatek is priced at +220 in the US Open futures betting odds.

Elena Rybakina (+450) and Aryna Sabalenka (+475) are viewed as the top contenders to dethrone Swiatek. Keep an eye on Rybakina’ status after she was forced to retire in her match against Jasmine Paolini in Cincinnati.

The results at Wimbledon show that anything is possible at a Grand Slam event as unseeded Marketa Vondrousova topped No. 6 seed Ons Jabeur in the championship match.

Each of the top four seeds reached the quarterfinals. Elina Svitolina upset Swiatek, Vondrousova eliminated American Jessica Pegula, No. 3 seed Rybakina fell to Jabeur and then Jabeur topped No. 2 seed Sabalenka in the semifinals.

A Look At the Americans

Jessica Pegula, the No. 3 seed on the women’s side, has had a successful summer that included a win in Montreal. She is priced at +1000 in the US Open betting odds.

Coco Gauff (+1000), Danielle Collins (+3300), and Madison Keys (+3500) lead the list of other top U.S.-born women’s players according to the tennis betting odds.

Sloane Stephens can’t be overlooked, even if she will be unseeded in the tournament. Venus Williams, a two-time US Open champion, received a wild card into the main draw and perhaps this will be her final appearance at the US Open.

On the men’s side, Tiafoe (+3000) is the top threat despite an early exit in Cincinnati. Taylor Fritz and Sebastian Korda both come in at +3300 followed by Christopher Eubanks (+5000), Ben Shelton (+8000), and Tommy Paul (+8000).

Paul made some tennis news with his upset of Alcaraz in Toronto and when they met again in Cincinnati, Paul extended Alcaraz to three sets.

No American men’s player has reached the final at the US Open since Andy Roddick fell to Roger Federer in 2006. Roddick is the last U.S. player to win the US Open title when he hit his way to the 2003 title.

There was a stretch of six U.S. women champions in New York in an 11-year span ending with three straight titles by Serena Williams from 2012-14. Since then, Sloane Stephens topped Madison Keys in the 2017 final followed by Serena Williams reaching the finals in 2018 and 2019.
