WTA Wimbledon Odds: Swiatek Dominates After Two Big Wins

Defending Champion Rybakina Had to Work to Avoid First-Round Upset

Americans Coco Gauff, Venus Williams Among Those Falling in the First Round

Four seeded players failed to get out of the first round in the top half of the bracket and that includes American Coco Gauff. The WTA Wimbledon odds had to be adjusted a bit after some of the early upsets.

When taking a look at the Wimbledon results, Greece’s Maria Sakkari had another early exit in the bottom portion of the draw despite winning the first set 6-0 in her opening match.

Among the top contenders, Elena Rybakina had the biggest threat in the first round as she dropped the first set to American Shelby Rogers before the defending Wimbledon champion rallied for the 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 win.

If last year’s Wimbledon tournament is any indication, expect the unexpected as the tournament progresses.

A Look At the Contenders

Top-seeded Iga Swiatek, who is priced at +187 to win her first Wimbledon title, barely had to break a sweat in her first two matches as she topped Lin Zhu of China 6-1, 6-3 and that was followed by a routine 6-2, 6-0 victory against Spain’s Sara Sorribes Tormo.

Swiatek, listed by the WTA Wimbledon odds as the current favorite, could be on a collision course with No. 11 seed Daria Kasatkina with Kasatkina also posting a pair of straight-set wins.

Kasatkina had to contend with the home fans as they were pulling for Great Britain’s Jodie Burrage when she faced Kasatkina. However, the favored Kasatkina won 6-0, 6-2.

Burrage was the only one of the three tennis players from Great Britain to get out of the first round in the top half of the draw. Burrage had no problem with American Caty McNally, winning 6-1, 6-3.

Harriet Dart and Katie Swan weren’t as fortunate. Dart fell in three sets to Diane Parry with Swan losing in straight sets to Bencic.

The other two front-runners are in the other half of the draw. No. 2 seed Aryna Sabalenka (+400 to win the title) wasn’t pushed much by Hungary’s Panna Udvardy in the first round.

Rybakina (+350) wasn’t done many factors when it came time to pull the draw with potential showdowns with No. 9 seed and two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova and No. 6 seed Ons Jabeur, the No. 4 choice at Wimbledon at +1200, potential opponents in her quarter.

No. 5 seed Caroline Garcia took out American Katie Volynets 6-4, 6-3 in her opening tennis match. She is well back at +5000 in the WTA Wimbledon odds.

Thanks For Coming

Considering Sofia Kenin’s track record, it can’t be viewed as a total stunner that Gauff failed to get out of the first round.

Another top American almost suffered the same fate before No. 4 seed Jessica Pegula outlasted fellow American Lauren Davis in three sets. Kenin is now priced at +2200 to win the Wimbledon championship.

Three seeded players in Pegula’s part of the draw have already been sent packing so perhaps those bodes well for a player who has never advanced past the third round in singles at Wimbledon.

No. 15 seed Liudmila Samsonova fell to Ana Bogdan in a pair of tiebreakers. No. 24 Qinwen Zheng lost in straight sets to Katerina Siniakova and the No. 31 seed Maya Sherif stumbled in a third-set tiebreaker against Rebekah Masarova.

Former champion Venus Williams might have played her final match at Wimbledon when she fell to Elina Svitolina 6-4, 6-3.

Kenin (+2200), Pegula (+3300) and Madison Keys (+4000) are the Americans with the best odds to win the Wimbledon title.

What’s On Tap?

A quick look at the updated draw shows some pretty intriguing matches when looking at the Wimbledon schedule.

American Sloane Stephens faces No. 20 seed Donna Vekic in the second round. Stephens is looking to advance past the third round at Wimbledon for the first time since making it to the 2013 quarterfinals.

Stephens dropped just five games against Sweden’s Rebecca Peterson in the first round. Vekic had the same result versus China’s Shuai Zhang. The two met in Wimbledon in 2018 with Vekic coming away with the 6-1, 6-3 victory.

Garcia’s matchup against former US Open finalist Leylah Fernandez could be worth checking out. Garcia had to work for a 7-6, 7-5 win when they met in the second round at the Australian Open in January. That was followed by Garcia’s three-set win at Indian Wells.

American Danielle Collins draws No. 14 seed Belinda Bencic in the second round. Collins won the only previous meeting. However, that took place in 2020 at Adelaide so not much should carry over from Collins’ 6-3, 6-1 win in that showdown.

A pair of veterans are ready to rumble as Elise Mertens and Elina Svitolina have combined to win 776 matches and yet this will be their first meeting.
