Krylov Enjoying Easier Fights
Take nothing away from Spann, but Krylov has faced tougher recent opponents and that’s why he’s the favorite.
Following a loss to Paul Craig, he defeated former champion Alexander Gustafsson in just over a minute before beating Volkan Oezdemir by decision.
He also lost to Magomed Ankalaev in 2021, but that’s the top level of the light heavyweight division and it holds him in good stead against Spann.
He has lost to only top-quality opponents and we’re not surprised by the Krylov vs Spann betting odds. The sportsbook could have made a case for opening Krylov at around -200, so bettors get fair odds.
Having 29 wins on his record can’t be overlooked. His UFC career started in 2013, so he has been around the blocks and beaten some of the best on his way up the rankings.
Krylov is ranked sixth in the light heavyweight division behind the likes of Jamahal Hill, Jiri Prochazka, and Ankalaev. It’s a tough division and he’s facing Spann, who is eighth in the rankings. Therefore, he might not rise the rankings even with a win.
His best possible situation is to leapfrog Anthony Smith and Aleksandar Rakic, which gets him to fourth and in line for a potential title fight.
Spann is a quality opponent after scoring wins over Dominick Reyes and Ion Cutelaba, so he can’t be discounted. However, it pays to take note of the betting action and it favors the current favorite.
Spann Out for Redemption
Spann believes he wasted most of his 20s, but he’s making up for lost time with impressive recent wins.
The 31-year-old from Memphis knocked out Reyes in the first round at UFC 281 and he submitted Cutelaba in the first round last May.
It has been an impressive turnaround for a fighter who lost to Anthony Smith and Johnny Walker in the years prior.
Of all the light heavyweight UFC fighters, Spann is highly underrated and Krylov has a real test on his hands.
“I feel like I wasted a lot of my 20s,” Spann said. “I did, athletically, because I didn’t really take it seriously enough. I knew how good I am, I knew how good I was. Everything always came so easy. I was just too immature to realize.
“My brother would always tell me, ‘You need to be able to back your skills up with strength and conditioning,’ and I was like, ‘Why? I can kick people in the head. Why stretch?’ And it just kind of snowballed from there. We’ve got it under control now, though.”
