Luque Looks for Strong Second Act
This is it for Vicente Luque. The Brazilian took a year off to focus on getting better after taking one of the worst beatings at the hands of Geoff Neal. Luque got beat by Neal so bad that he suffered internal hemorrhaging. The “Silent Assassin” used to be the fighter to hand out knockouts. Now, he’s on the comeback trail after two hard defeats. Will he still be the same guy?
Luque has eight performance bonuses in the UFC and has a 92.9% finish-to-win ratio. But it is often the case where a fighter is never the same after getting destroyed. Luque’s loss to Neal could have been a career-changing defeat. If Luque is compromised, he may find it harder to pull the trigger.
But the public is confident in him and have bet the Luque vs Dos Anjos odds to his favor. Luque opened as a +125 underdog but has now been bet down to near pick ‘em odds at -110. The total of 4.5 rounds is also favored to go under that at -140. Thus, many still believe he can finish the job.
This is a tough ask, however. Dos Anjos was a former champion at lightweight and a former title challenger at welterweight. He’s been in 10 UFC main events or title fights. The UFC is not giving Luque a layup for his comeback fight. Thus, it’s sink or swim for the contender. And if he can beat “RDA”, it may be the start of his career resurgence.
Dos Anjos Keeps Climbing the UFC Record Books
When his career comes to a close, Rafael dos Anjos may own most of the UFC’s records. At 38, the former lightweight champion is still going strong in two weight classes. He nearly defeated 155-pound contender Rafael Fiziev two fights ago. Now, he’s moved back to welterweight and made easy work of Bryan Barberena.
Dos Anjos is in the top of most of the UFC’s records. His 33 bouts places him at sixth, tied with Demian Maia. He has the longest fight time in the UFC (over eight hours) and his 21 wins is tied at sixth with the likes of Dustin Poirier and Jon Jones.
The Brazilian may no longer be part of the current UFC champions, but he’s been consistent at facing and beating ranked opposition. Dos Anjos is also rarely an underdog on the UFC betting odds for a reason. He’s 6-1 in his last seven bouts as a favorite.
And even if Dos Anjos is only 2-4 in his last six bouts at welterweight, most of his losses have come against champions like Leon Edwards and Kamaru Usman. Dos Anjos is still a force at 170 pounds and walks around at nearly 200 pounds.
“Fighting at welterweight, for me, is a more comfortable camp overall,” Dos Anjos said via UFC.com. “I don’t have to worry and stress too much about weight, and I can just focus 100 percent on the fight. Of course, I still need to cut a little weight, but nothing compared to lightweight, so it makes it easier for me.”
Indeed, Dos Anjos could be stronger and more durable at welterweight. Hence, he’s not a bad bet given where the Luque vs Dos Anjos odds are trending.
