Imanov Shooting for Four Straight
The 27-year-old is looking to continue the dominance of Dagestan fighters in the UFC with his fourth straight victory.
The winning streak started with a win over Ian Heinisch in July 2021, before beating Edmen Shahbazyan and Joaquin Buckley in subsequent fights.
The French-speaking fighter is picked to have a big 2023, so the -220 favorite would want to get his year off to a winning start. He is a confident fighter and that’s reflected in Imanov vs Gastelum odds.
He’s giving Gastelum plenty of respect and looks forward to fighting him, following a cancellation last year.
“I am very proud to fight Kelvin Gastelum now. I was disappointed when our fight got canceled, but at this point, I’m happy to have the opportunity to fight such a big name,”
“Kelvin is a tough guy, I have a lot of respect for him. Like me, he is a fighter and I think our styles will guarantee a great fight. Kelvin’s been in the UFC a long time and he’s fought a lot of guys. He is young but experienced. He’s picked up a lot of injuries throughout his career, and that’s a good thing for me.” Imanov said
The only negative is having only 15 fights on his record. He is 12-3, so Gastelum has the experience edge and that shouldn’t be overlooked in the UFC. However, he’s a rising star and we expect UFC this weekend to end with a bang with the Imanov vs Gastelum fight.
Gastelum to End Frustration
Life hasn’t been easy for Gastelum, who has only one win since 2018. He lost to Israel Adesanya at UFC 236 before losing to Darren Till, Jack Hermansson, Robert Whittaker, and Jared Cannonier in subsequent fights.
His only win since then came against Ian Heinisch, but to his credit, he has fought the very best in the middleweight division, unlike Imanov.
That could be the big difference, but we are worried about his lack of recent success and having all of 2022 off is another worry. His fights against Dricus Du Plessis and Imanov were cancelled, so he might need to shake off the rust.
“It will be 28 days since you watched anything from the UFC. To make up for it, I told myself I would bring beautiful, pure violence. See you soon,” Gastelum said.
He is talking a big game, which isn’t unlike Kelvin Gastelum. He won’t want to look at Imanov vs Gastelum odds too closely, which has him at +175 to cause an upset. He’ll need to land a big blow to put Imanov on his haunches.
It’s all about heart for Gastelum. He is nearing the twilight of his career at 31 and he needs a statement win to continue booking main card fights.
With everything on the line, it’s tough to bet against Imanov. He is trending in the right direction and he is the hungrier fighter.
