Recap of Last Face-Off

Back in Week 17 (seems ages ago) these two teams were scheduled to meet for their last matchup, with the Buffalo Bills looking to clash with the previous year’s Super Bowl runners-up, the Bengals. Alas, the odds were not in their favor, as Damar Hamlin suffered a life-threatening cardiac arrest on the field, and the game was then suspended and canceled.

It was the first game to be canceled since 1935, and it led to a rule-change kerfuffle (my new favorite word, BTW) about how playoff teams were to be seeded when some of them had played more games than others. As it stands, both these teams will have played only 16 games instead of 17; that lost game was a seeding game, and truly important.

Before this suspended showdown, they had last met in 2019, and have come a long way after that. The Bills had won 6 of their 10 games previous to this matchup, with their period of dominance being between 1989 and 2010, when they were successful in all ten matchups against the Bengals.

Divisional Game Facts

Hamlin’s remarkable recovery, and both teams ending their regular season with a W, means we have them both advancing past the Wild Card round towards a beat-down. This divisional matchup will take place at Highmark Stadium -the Bills’ home stadium- basically because, as luck would have it, the Bills are AFC No. 2 seed and the Bengals are the conference’s No. 3 seed.

Since the NFL saw both had the same number of games, but the Bills were a higher seed, the selection popped up as a no-brainer and, thus, they didn’t go for the neutral setup. So you can just take  into account the stats prior to the suspended Week 17 game for your wagering preferences for this divisional!
