Washington Commanders vs Detroit Lions

Starting the season with home-field advantage in Weeks 1 and 2 should bring confidence to a Detroit Lions side that has been lacking in motivation and W’s for a number of years. This week, they host a visit from the NFC East’s Washington Commanders.

Commanders vs Lions Highlights

History has been kind to this week’s home team, with the Detroit Lions vs Washington Commanders resulting in a Lions win in 5 out of the last 6 meetings. After a season of disappointment in 2021, resulting in a 3-13-1 4th place finish in the NFC North, Dan Campbell will be looking to bring post-season opportunities back to Detroit for the first time since 2016. The Lions have been the stars of this year’s NFL preseason, and -despite encouraging signs against the Colts in the preseason- those betting on NFL games are likely to swing in favor of this week’s road team to cover the spread.

The Commanders will see this as one of their more appetizing road games this season and will be looking to return to success in a division that seems to be even more competitive than in previous years. The peaks and troughs of the last few years are notable, with the Commanders winning the division 3 times in the last 10 years but finishing rock bottom on the same number of occasions.

NFL betting odds should see Ron Rivera’s men the firm favorites against the last season’s second-worst defensive record and third-worst offensive record in the league. The absence of star edge Chase Young for the first few weeks of the season will leave limited options in the pass rush, though, so expect Jared Goff to be allowed more freedom in the pocket than the Commander’s other opponents might be granted.
